my daughter's 93 convertible
Posted by GeoStalker (Valued Members) at Apr 30 2012, 05:14 PM. 8 comments
We've owned my daughter's 93 convertible with auto tranny for a little over two years now and it has always had an oil leak. The previous owner disclosed this problem and said he could never quite diagnose it and didn't know where it was coming from. I took it to a local Mr. Tire (big mistake!) and they claimed to have replaced the cam seal and crank seal and fixed the problem. But the oil leak remained.
Took it to a mechanic buddy of mine a year later to replace a cam seal, and to go ahead and replace the crank seal while he was at it. For some reason, I thought these two locations could be the only possible two locations for a leak, based on experience with other Metros and feedback here. I got it back from my friend and drove it home for the three miles with no leaks. But then I took my wife on an hour long drive in the country, and the thing was leaking all over the place!
Took it back to my friend, who is actually a Toyota expert, and he suggested that it could be the oil pump gasket/cover, which is right next to the water pump. He noticed inside the timing belt cover that the leak wasn't coming from the cam seal, nor the crank seal, but was moving sideways from the aforementioned cover. His experience with Toyota's is that they develop a crack that leaks under load, but not at idle.
After keeping the car for the weekend, his suspicions were proven correct....there was a crack in the cover. The thing that sucks is that new covers are $120, and obviously the labor to replace. However, he is CONFIDENT it won't leak any further. I ask that he keep the old cover so I can share my findings with the forum either here or at Geopalooza Ohio.
So for all you Metro owners with oil leaks that only appear under load, here is another possible location.

Darth Vader stalking Metro

If this doesn't embody the overall spirit of LeMons racing I don't know what does. A 944 with a Ford Ranger motor, straight pipe shooting flames while carrying a life size version of Darth Vader...All the while on the heels of our fearless Metro.
Cheers!

Well LemonAid Racing managed to walk away with the coveted Index of Effluency award (IOE). The top prize in LeMons racing goes to the car that gets the most from the least. Our trusty Geo has now been added to the exclusive club.
