Yes, I saw that one ($10 + $8 shipping). Not much of a deal.

I have pulled many pieces from the bone yard,
If you are careful you can get them apart,
Shell, louvers, slider,
and use the good pieces from 3 or 4 to make one good one.
One time I just used "Duco Cement" (a high quality plastic glue) to glue it together in the center/center position.
I couldn't get enough parts to make a good one and the customer wanted the car right away.

How do you remove them? Will they pop out with some help?

They are supposed to pop out, but are easily broken when doing so.

The vents on the side pop out. The center vent is another story. It has screws and you have to get behind the dash to get to them.

As Oxxon said,
The center is the biggie.
You can get to the screws after you remove the radio.
The screws are easy enough to remove with a stubby phillips screwdriver.
If you get lucky (and I do more often than not), some one has already taken those screws out so you can just pop the vent into your hand.
Be Careful,
Take your time,
Go to the bone yard and pull some from junked cars first, then pull yours.
or you can buy new ones from your local GM Dealer for $20.
I like to re-use as much pre-owned stuff as possible. (read !cheap!)

Thanks for the help. When you say buy them at the dealership - does that read $20 per vent, or $20 for a set?

Just went to a Pick and Pull salvage yard. Found 2 Metro's. One to practice on and one to pull good parts from. Man alive that vent over the radio is a bugger and a half. You need a spider monkey to reach those screws. It was tough - but I got three vents for $16.00.

Now the tough part. Installing them without tearing the dash apart or breaking the vents. Why can't things be simple?

You do not need to replace the screws behind the center vent.
It will stay in on its own without the extra hassle.
Thats as simple as I can make it

On the right hand side there is a wide piece of plastic that sticks out there about an inch. If I trim that off and trim the screw tabs would it stay in? That way I could just slide it in without damaging the dash or other components.

I noticed that on both cars when removing the A/C controls the "AC" button broke to little pieces when I pulled it off. Very little pressure and it went flyin'!!

Yeah those A/C buttons are fragile.
Same with the blower switch.
I don't remember what I went through with the Center Vent install. You may be right, there is a tingling memory in the back of my mind of some trimming and modifying. And at least one is held in with RTV Adhesive. It smells like the dickens but does a great job on interior stuff.
I do remember that none of the ones I've replaced, and there have been about six, have the screws back in them.

If you have the heater controls out, now is a good time to re-enforce the blower switch.
The top of the switch will pop off. Springs and leetle tiny balls go flying.
If you look down at the top you can see two slots. One on either side of the housing, not quite centered.
I use those leetle teeny wire ties, the useless one in the set you buy, to fix it.
put one tie in from the top, and one in the other slot from the bottom.
Feed them together and make the heads end up at the corners. Trim closely with a razor knife and !Voila!
Fixed.
Have fun,

That is strange my 95 has no screws in the center vent just got to be carfull of the plastic tabs holding the outer face plate in.

I did the un-heard -of ,I blocked off my center vent and have tons more air coming from the side vents to de-fog the side glass.
