Does your family object to the Metro

Just wondering how common this is. When my wife and I first started looking for a high mpg car we looked at several Metros but couldn't touch one for under $800. Eventually I ended up with a 4dr. Civic...which had the engine give out a year later and during this time our daughter was born. So after the Civic died I started driving my Ranger and eventually found my Metro. She didn't really say anything about it when I bought it until a few weeks later she said she wasn't comfortable with me being in it. I drive to work really early and there are lots of deer out. Eventually realized she REALLY, REALLY does not like me driving the Metro and considers it a death trap.

So...anyone else out there run into similar feelings? Anyone been in an accident with one to see how they hold up?

I have seen the crash videos on Youtube and I feel the 1995-2001 models are not unsafe. The older ones may not fair as well, but what do you expect from a small car? I am always a defensive driver. One large deer would probably total the car and being in an accident with another vehicle would be bad.

I had a Kawasaki Concours motorcycle about 7 years ago until some low-flying-venison came out of the darkness. The bike was totaled. My helmet had another set of pavement marks on it. The dear was gone when I woke up. Trust me, you would rather be driving a Metro during deer season than a motorcycle.

How safe is any car in an accident? A Geo may not have all the latest safety features but like JM said, a little defensive driving can make up for a lot of that. While its nice to see your wife is concerned for your safety, I think her fears are a bit overblown. She will come to see the cars value in time.

I have had a Metro in the driveway since 1996. :drivin
My wife hated the cars until the recent gas crunch. :smackface
My kids however thought it was as fun as could be, especially since I will take a Sunday morning , find an empty parking lot ,
and go "Stupid Driving" :nfs
That is where we, the occupants , do stupid things behind the wheel. (empty lot, no trees or obstacles, I feel it has helped my kids learn to be better drivers) Learning the physical limits of the car in a relatively safe environment. My youngest was 10 when she was first driving the Geo.
Only once in the last 12 years has a policeman questioned our activities.
It has taken me untill this year to get my wife to drive it for short trips. :thumb
There is a big difference between the Metro and my wifes Avalon. :drivin
Taking into consideration the size of the vehicle has helped her understand what the Geo is all about.
If you believe the car to be less safe than any others, then you the driver need to pay closer attention to the other idiots on the road.
All us idiots gotta stick together. :cheers

I haven't worried about deer so much...I figure the Geo is low enough I'd just take out its legs and it would fly over the car. Going off the road and hitting something is the only time I worry about it...although that can mess you up no matter what you are driving. When I go to work it is all on 2 lane rural highways and there is a lot of traffic...but everyone is going the same direction I am. Either way she'd much rather have me driving my Civic with its airbags. For now I just drive something else if it is snowy because even with cheaper gas it saves me $3 a day over my Ranger.

When I picked up Metro's for the kids, mine went through the roof! I reminded her of the 35mph head-on hit I took in the '90 Metro years back, and how I walked away unscathed...It didn't help her mood. She's still very worried about them driving Metro's, mainly because of their inexperience.

I have read countless comments on the internet, however, stating that the Air Bags never seem to deploy in our cars. I read these comments during a Google search of recalls for Geo Metro's. Although no recalls where issued for Air Bag failures, lack of deployment was a very common complaint from ranting owners who had been rear-ended or had struck someone/something with the front of their car. There was one guy who complained that is airbag actually deployed properly....the problem he had with it was the fact that he was driving 60mph on the freeway when it happened! There were also a couple comments reporting seat failure during a rear-ended situation...it's seems the back of the seat can collapse rearward when getting hit from behind.

I realize accidents are just that...people can't avoid them because they don't see them coming. With that said, most people "don't see it coming" because they aren't fully aware of their surroundings at all times. Paying hyper-attention to all the idiots around us 100% of the time is the only way to stay out of harms way and stay alive. AND, ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT. Mine saved me from windshield contact for sure!!!

May every Geo Metro driver die of natural causes!

That is almost worthy of a bumper sticker! Don't think I'll show my wife right now though!

My parents object big time, especially after that snowstorm on Dec. 19. The Geo is so skiddish, and those airbags won't save my knees in a head-on. Oh well; gotta snuff out someday I guess.

My parents approve of my metro. They werent to thrilled when I bought it but once they saw the milage it got over my truck they started to like it. My mom does worry about me getting in a wreck with it but shes just happy I'm not on a motorcycle. I did however park my metro this winter and started driving my truck full time, with gas the way it is and the snow and ice we have it made more sense to me to have 4wd and more metal around me. :thumb

My Mom died in a car accident. Not from smoking all her life, strange... :-/ My Wife, drove 5-Ton truck/trailer and 10-Ton trucks in the Army. I got my '91 and a year later the Wife spots a '95 for sale and wants it. She loves her Geo.

Dangerous? We have a 4'-11", 60+ year old woman driving a full size Hummer around town. Swear nobody's driving it as it comes at you. She can't see over the steering wheel. Sure she's safe, insured, nobody else is safe! :smackface

I prefer NOT to feel secure. I don't feel invincible, insulated from everybody, like God's gift to the highway, not responsible for my actions because the insurance company will pay.
