Trying to stay away from asphalt and tar applications. This http://www.audimutesoundproofing.com/how-to-soundproof-a-room-soundproof-walls-sound-insulation.aspx can be loose layed or glued in floor applications and just might be used in door and vertical applications by gluing also. Dissapates moisture. Not sure if headliner adhesive will work, but might try it. The price isn't bad, not as cheap as carpet padding, but 50' for $80. It's made 80% from old tires (I wish I'd thought of that idea for used tires.$$) I've not used it yet, but leaning this way if I don't use carpet pad.

Read through the thread here and am all in favor of some sound proofing/noise dampening in the metro's.
Here's a product we've purchased more than once, and are certainly pleased with the results. 80mils thick like the good Audiotechnix stuff, but @ $150 less per 100sq.ft.

For other frequencies & internal noises, either a mass-loaded vinyl(second skin selections), or an automotive carpet layer, in the offending panels goes a long way...

I'm considering a mattress pad in the rear fender area if I can find one for free that I can muck about with.

I used the Fatmat in both my 73 turbo Beetle and my 66 VW panel Bus. It is amazing. Best stuff you can get for the price. I am planning a rebuild of the Metro soon and have already ordered 50 sq feet to install in it.

Try this, I did...

Take everything out of the car, carpet seats everything, even the plastic interior panels.

Then put only the drivers seat back in.

Drive for two weeks, hopefully on rain wet roads.

Then put everything back in the car, and it will be a lot quieter, you will be amazed :)

Found a giant chair cushion out behind a second hand store, probably 3'x4'

Started cutting it up, and had to keep getting smaller and smaller so it could be shoved into the cavities, but I think this will work quite nicely. Further, it could be done with one cushion from a three seater couch. and probably still have some leftover.

Free free free free....
