Inside the eagle cage; A great experience

Victory is mine!!!!

Last weekend we went to Realfoot Lake. It sounds strange to go in the winter, but West Tennessee is the winter home of many bald eagles. They have a large cage at the visitor's center with two eagles in it. Both of them had been injured at one time, and would most likely not survive in the wild.

We were there at just the right time, and one of the park rangers let me go inside the cage to take photos. I will tell you now that standing 4 foot from one of these things with no one holding it down and no training was an experience like no other.

I decided to post this pic to share with you all. I'm sorry it's so large in size, but I figured this time it was worth it.

Very nice! We have them in the wild around here occasionally and sometime you can get lucky and find a nesting area if you walk the rivers but they are still kind of rare in the area. Seeing one of them that close is kind of a religious experience!

Thanks guys. It was really cool. They did move around a lot, and one of them flew from one side of the cage to the other passing less than 4 feet from me. It was too magical a moment for me to be worried. Besides, the ranger said that both of these were adults when they were injured and brought to the Visitor's Center. He said they were not injured by humans, but were nursed back to health by humans, and had been around people for a couple of years. The danger was minimal.

One guy did get a little too close. Here is the eagle voicing it's displeasure. The guy backed up very quickly...

Wow, that would be cool! When I was in middle school some friends of my parents invited us to go to Milford Lake and watch them with their periscope. Very majestic...even at that distance. My brother in law has one that will circle his house once in a while that I've seen...awesome in flight too.
