The trans in mine just got new fluid after 30K and I noticed the same results. Some black film and very clean oil. |

It would be nice to be able to buy an accurate measuring device for oil viscosity. Synchromesh is not cheap, and if the viscosity of my old clean oil was the same as the new stuff I put in, then I just wasted $24 and a half hour. I changed it due to the weak synchros related to 2nd gear, and my desire to prolong the life of the whole car as long as possible. |

Weekend Rebuild Update 20 November, 2009 Some weeks ago, I replaced the timing belt. I messed with the timing a bit and thought that I had it tuned well enough. A couple nights ago I put the timing light on it and found it had barely any advance at all. I dialed the advance up to 8 degrees and it felt like a different car. I did a round trip, driving carefully, 57 mpg or less and found my mileage rose to 54.4 mpg. The morning part of the trip was in 38 degree temperatures. I am now starting to suspect that my timing may not have been truly optimal during the summer when I hit my peak of 60 mpg. Now I can't wait for next summer to see what it will really do. |

man owe man I dream of hitting 60mpg. my max right now is 47.8mpg (but that is with a slightly rough but very good compression engine and 1300 pounds of people and gear in the car and on 10% ethanol and in the winter) I hope to break 50mpg fully loaded in the spring. I DREAM of 60mpg! I have got to get myself another xfi engine so I can rebuild it and then "swap" it with my current engine and then rebuild that one too :-) (hey I can dream right!) also can you list everything you needed to do the rebuild and what those things cost? Weekend Rebuild Update for Thanksgiving weekend, 2009: I had a very minor oil pan leak and decided to put a new gasket in. After removing the oil pan, I got a good look inside the engine up to the pistons. I was surprised to see all three of them as bright, shiny and free of any stain or discoloration as the day we put them in. |

The second gear syncro is starting to get tired. If you open it up and look you should find that the engagement teeth are starting to show wear. If you stop soon enough you may not have to replace the gear and 1/2slider. Hopefully. But the longer you drive it. The more expensive it will be. The lighter oil will help in the short term. On the post above where you and Mr Mullet noticed the black/gray film when you changed out trans fluid is normal. They are very fine metal particals. Very fine. When you open up your trans and clean all the little parts like inside the hub/slider combo, or the inner lip of the steel sync cone. It is gonna have that same goo. It must all be cleaned up. If not when install your new bearings and syncs, it will be running around in your new parts. And we don't want that |

Murf, I am pretty patient when going into 2nd gear from above and below. I give it the time it takes to drop in without grinding. And, I do not think the 2nd gear synchro is any worse now than the first day I put in synchromesh. I's like to nurse both engine and tranny along as far as they will go and then rebuild the second engine I bought from Sam and put it in along with the transmission that came with it. My commute involves so much highway driving that I probably go into and out of 2nd gear less frequently than many Metro owners with much shorter commutes. Sounds like you have been inside these transmissions... Compared to an engine rebuild, how hard is it to work on a a manual tranmission? |

Until just recently I have spent most of my adult life working on standard transmissions. If you are a gear head, no problem with the build. But if you are a beginer. Major head aches. It is not the toughness of the build, but tooling and knowing what to look out for. There are some things to look out for. Things I can't type in here. LOL It would take a long time to write up a how to on this. I tore down my unit for the Starr. I need to get a 2nd, 1st gears, and the 1/2 slider. I have not been able to locate all three in one place. I went back up the 100 mile to the donor car for my front end. Both those gears are bad in it too. Do I have to keep looking. We are lucky. When they came up into the 90s, they improved the 1/2 syncs and sync teeth on the gears and slider. The sync is now larger. In the early MV2s they all were just chewed up. But with the increase in the size of the sync. It reduces the friction on the brass and the engagement teeth. Everytime you hear it grind, hesitate of it falls through. It removes just alittle meat from those teeth. And what happens to one, happens to the other except backwards. The hardest part to this unit is having a press or really good pullers to tear down the shafts. And having a big bearing splitter to pull off the diff bearings. I think one is a 6307, and the other is a 6007. And odd bearing. But once they are off, the reassy is easy enough. Most people do not have the tools to do this. If you want to do this PM me. Because of my limited access lately, it may take a bit to get back here. If you need help with this, and I am not around. Post a message here for me. 2 of the folks here have my #. I will PM them and let them know its okay to PM you with it. Just keep the easy shifts going like you are. The damage was most likely done before you got it. |
