One-Leg Front Wheel Drive Metro Feasible???; Would it work?

I was thinking...(dangerous, I know..)
Would it be possible to eliminate one of the half-shafts (axle) from a Metro and still have a drivable car afterwards? I know it would be possible, but would it be beneficial to fuel economy? Would it pull horribly to one side all the time? Which shaft would be best to remove? All you would need is the spline end of the axle for the bearings & seal, and something to plug the transmission output on one side...

Thoughts or comments???

Might not move. I know in a regular rear wheel drive if you break a axle it will not move. Some one might prove me wrong but thats my guess. :drivin :drivin

If you welded the spider gears in the diff to lock it, like the stock car guys do, it would work. But would be horrible to drive.

I wanted to add my two cents, but it seems everyone beat me to it.
It won't move while in gear. That's what happened when the Axel broke on my Metro.
It would be much harder to drive, especially going around corners or in bad weather.

Next time I feel a thought coming on, I'll try to suppress it...lol

Well..... Yeah, like said, if you just unbolted an axle, nothing would happen, the car would just sit there. If you froze the axle frange, then twice the rpms would go tothe axle connected. Only locking the diff would make the speed o and diff work the same, however it will pull like a muther to that side.

I am guessing your thinking about removing the torque toe-in out of the equation, however accelerating slower reduces that as well as toeing it out a little to compennsate.
