I just completed one tank full. I drove a viligant 55-60 mph and got 36.5 mpg. I did a quick check just this afternoon when I got home from the commute and found that the left front brake has been sticking. It was extremely hot to the touch. I feel this might have been my major source of bad fuel economy all along. Has anyone had a sticking brake problem with one of these before? Autozone sales a rebuilt brake Caliber for $43 after a core return. I quess I"ll change it out and test again. I know that this car can get better performance that what it has been getting.

I try to replace brakes in sets. If you can afford it replace the other caliper/pads also. Then you will be good to go, I mean stop. :thumb :drivin :drivin

I had both my calipers seize on my 1998 Metro. Really hurts fuel economy also.

thats exactly what my problem was,the caliper was sticking, causing my squeel, and probably bad mileage too,i got great for the first 3 months but it dropped a fair bit,i was at around 39,was getting 32-33 last two tanks, figured partly cause of wether, moreso sticking caliper...

My 1.0 3 cyl is barely doing 30 mpg :banghead , but I drive mostly in the city (90%). Is that a decent average my fellow Metro owners?

Usually when I'm checking out brakes I'll get a floor jack ready and then drive up to the jack and hit the brakes hard. Jump out and jack up the front as soon as possible and try to spin each wheel and check for resistance more than just what the CV shaft or transmission causes. Sometimes a caliper will release but it will release slower than it should...or it just plain sticks.

Another method is to apply the brakes on a deserted road or parking lot then drive a bit further. Use the parking brake to stop the car and then get out and feel the rotors...the temperature should be even. Just be careful that you don't burn yourself...there isn't a set distance I drive after applying the brakes.

Check the rear brakes too. Apply the parking brake and then drive a couple feet...jack up the rear and make sure both wheels spin freely.

I've been driving 70-75mph, passing people, and accelerating fast and been getting 35-38mpg. This week I'm slowing down and driving slower to see how it does. I'd think you could get better than 30 in town but I haven't been in that situation.

I still found myself creeping up to 70mph or so on every trip but kept slowing down and trying not to...filled up tonight and got 42mpg on the tank.
