Bobby called me this afternoon, :fon
While I was in the midst of being pi$$ed off at the F150 for :banghead not cooperating and :banghead allowing itself to be :banghead repaired easily. :banghead
He has purchased a small socket set and removed the fenders, and hood, and front bumper cover, and reinforcement behind the bumper.
I will pick him up tomorrow around 08:30, :coffee where we will asses the damage with greater accuracy, (cause all the parts are out of the way now), then head to Pick-N-Pull to get parts.
I will take more pictures and see if there is anything we overlooked the first time around. :dunno

Pickins was slim at the yard today,
All the Geos was beat up :redx (one poor Metro had been hit so hard on three sides it wasn't easy to tell if anybody lived) :holycrap or had been robbed.
All we were able to get was the bumper light assembly, the reinforcement and the filler.
They are supposed to put some more lines :stoner out later this week.
Meanwhile I will call my friend, :fon who just happens to own a junkyard, :tumbleweed and see if he has anything we can use.

Schultz is more than willing to help. :cheers
Metroshultz and I work together. He's tryin' to talk me into helpin', too. But, so far --- he's better'n me. We'll see.
You won't find many out there with Shultzy's caring mindset. He's a great guy as a coworker and friend.

OK, P***, is the butter thick enough?

UPDATE

Bobby just purchased a 1993 Metro exactly like his crashed 1994.
It needs a little work, but a lot less than the victim.
So this weekend we will be pulling parts from the victim to put on the new one.
This relieves me of the worry about his frame issues.
Upon closer inspection, with the fenders off, there is also frame damage on the right as well as what we already saw on the left.
I must admit now, I was none to keen on doing both the right and left frame horn. One side would have been O.K. then I would use the good side as reference. With 2 bent frame horns I have no reference and since I don't have a body shop manual for point to point measurements it would have been dicey getting all the holes in all the right places.

Soo off to the crusher with you, crash victim.
After we save all the goodness from your insides.
MMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmm Guuuuuuuud.

A better look at Thing 1's bent right frame extension.

Thing 2

Uh Oh the dreaded frame rot!! In this pic you can clearly see the lower control arm is pulling away from the body.

Another view

And another

Oooh lookie here, no rust on thing 1. I believe it will work.

Yes I'm sure it will.

These cars are put together with preformed panels. All the panels are spot welded together. I will cut the good lower panel from Thing 1 and weld it to the good body sections of thing 2. Then I will weld some re-enforcements in just like Johnny and the rest of the guys who have experienced the dreaded frame rot.
In the FWIW column,
This is the only thing this car needs to be road ready. The previous owner thought the wheel was kicked out due to a bad bearing. We checked the lights and such for Virginia State Inspection. So, tomorrow, Lord willing, we will be welding one Geo frame to another in an attempt to make a really strong front end.

We are done for the day.
I have to get cleaned up for the Grandsons Birthday party.
9 this year!
Bobby has the camera and will post pics sometime this evening.
Basically;
We got the good frame piece from Thing 1
and trimmed it down to a usable size.
Then cut bad frame piece from Thing 2
and trimmed just enough metal to get a solid weld all the way around.
I will put some angle iron in areas that appear to be lacking in strength.
and re-enforce what ever else looks "Iffy"
Next weekend we will take the other side and weld it up before it separates from the car like this one did.

I learned today that Paul is a lot like Michelangelo. But instead of marble, he uses metal. Here are some pictures of the artist at work.

I'm not sure what the #*%hole in the picture below is trying to do. He looks like one of Santa's elves working on Christmas toys ... and failing.

Here's the hole left behind in "Thing 1."

If you can't bring the car to the garage, bring the garage to the car.

Posted Image

Now if the weather permits, all that's left is to take this:

... and weld it onto "Thing 2."

Paul,

Do you weld with conventional welding rods or do you have a MIG welder? if rods, what rods (number, thickness and brand) do you use and what current settings would be about right for the "tin foil" these cars are made from?
