I have been a little out of it recently. I found out Saturday night, (O.K. Sunday morning), my dog has inoperable cancer. We took her to the Vet Emergency room around midnight Sat. because she couldn't breathe. I though maybe she had a bone stuck sideways in her throat , or something else rather harmless. After X-Rays we found out she has a body riddled with cancer and she won't be here much longer. She can't breathe due to fluid and blood building up around her heart and lungs and they can only remove the fluid so she can breathe easier but now the fluid is back and i am going back to the vet this a.m. so we can see if there is something i can do at home to make her life easier for the next week or so until she pas bye I was unsure of whether to re-write this completely or leave it and decided to leave it. The syntax and lack of punctuation show my state of mind. After a long talk with the vet, and family, we decided to have her put to sleep. She will not recover, the cancer is inoperable, she was in great distress. She can't breathe again. She doesn't know why. She looks at me as if to ask "Why can't you fix me?" I can fix a lot of stuff, but I could not fix my dog. 11 1/2 years old. Black Lab / Chow mix Very affectionate Loved to play and go for walks. (now who's going to make me get off my ass and go for a walk?) I knew she was feeling ill a week ago and just though she had a cold. When she couldn't breathe on Sat. nite we thought it was due to the cold or maybe had become pneumonia. Little did I know or think it would be cancer. It was like I had been hit with a truck. perfect end to a shitty day. I just need to rant and get stuff out, Thanx guys for being my sounding board. I told my wife I don't want another dog for a long time. We have cats and have had a hamster and fish but for some reason I become attached to the dogs. I guess they are a lot like me. Don't care where they sleep. Don't care what they eat. Love to play and be mischievous. My daughter says I get attached because they return the affection I give them, unlike hamsters and cats and fish. Maybe that's why I got attached to my wife. Well I gotta get ready for work now and I have to pretend all is well for my grandson. See you later when we work more on the StormMetro. Edited by metroschultz, Feb 24 2009, 11:24 AM.

I am a dog lover also. I understand your feelings. Words fail me on situations like this. |

I have two dogs. I would advise euthanasia right now. Dying with dignity rather than suffering. Although call me weird, I want to have my dogs taxidermied when they die. It would be a shame to not preserve such a beautiful coat. |

Ah, man, there goes my morning. I'm crying for your loss. But she is better off now, out of pain and suffering. You gave her the best life she could have. It's never fair.Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. I'm going to be a basket case for days when our Gracie has to leave us. Our vet makes house calls and I saw her do the kind act in the back of a friends SUV once. Small town. When you are ready another dog will come into your life, maybe a rescue. They really seem to appreciate it. I was just reading on my religion forum about butterflies at funerals. It was a caterpillar but that's gone and now it's a beautiful butterfly. |

Doing the right thing is not always the easy thing. I put my dog down two years ago, very similar situation to yours - one of the hardest things I've ever done. cheers to all those great dogs!! |

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I have always considered dogs to be actual family members. I never knew I would become so attached. Well, I do know, because I can relate to your statement: Because they return the affection I give them, unlike hamsters and cats and fish. |

I too am sorry to hear about you losing your pal. We have 2 dogs. One is a 4 yr old black lab named Star. She has a big white "star" centered on her chest. She weighs in at 98 lbs. Doc says she's too big, but i swear she doesn't have any fat. The other one is a 2 yr old Heinz 57 rescued from the pound. You did the right thing. Maybe you can get another one later. Take care. |

November 2007 I had to put down one of my beloved dogs. She had aggressive cancer and could no longer move without being in pain. We made an appointment for an expensive surgery, but she did not make it. I went with her to the vet and held her as they put her to sleep. It was quick and humane and was the right thing to do. I am sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry about your dog. Right now I have a little guy that I don't know what I'm going to do when he passes. I named him Charlie Manson.

Metroschultz, I am very sorry for your loss. I know I'm new here, but those inadaquate words are from my heart. I have to put my furry baby to sleep tomorrow. I know it's a kindness, but its sure as hell hard. |
