New Honda Insight; mpg letdown

Victory is mine!!!!

So a salesman from the local Honda dealership called me today (yes I have them looking for a Gen 1 Insight for me). He was all excited to tell me that the 2010 Insights were coming off the truck, and asked if I wanted one. I had to tell him no. They are a great deal at under 20K, and I am sure they will take a lot of market share from Prius, but the top end EPA rating is only 43 mpg.

I told him that I am not willing to drop from 55 mpg average to 43. In short, their new long awaited hybrid did not get good enough mpg. He was a more than a little disappointed.

Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for some of the things that Honda has done, but 43 mpg? What a let down...

Will,

This just goes to show what a treasure we have in our old beater Metros and the value of a website like this to help us keep them running.

I'd like to see what kind of MPG it will get if it is hypermiled. Who knows, it might do ok.

Is that 43mpg a "paper" number or a real world number? They can be very different. I do agree, that value wise, its gonna be hard to beat a Metro.

Driving style has a lot to do with fuel economy. My scion xa I did 40mph, traveled on 60 mph roads as much as possible and in 4th gear, got the best fuel economy. I know withthe prius, if you are careful, you can easily get 100mpg in its stock configuration by working the car so it runs on electric only, then recharge on riding the brakes vs hard braking, etc. I hope my metro does the same 50 or so mpg, but I like ac and do lots of highway driving. I did with my scion and got at least 40 mpg a tank. Going the posted limit I get 46.

I know the new epa numbers ar elowered for real world, those who let a car warm up, idle at fast food places and jack rabbit starts. I know the smart dealer I visited they said customers get 50 or mroe that do highway driving vs city.

A little update on this...

I went to my local Honda dealership yesterday and drove the new Insight. It was an excellent vehicle. The mph display is digital like the first Insight was, but it is placed above the steering wheel. It also had a nice green glow about it, until you did something bad for mpg. If you got into the throttle too much, or ran a gear too long (paddle shift option) and started to hurt you mpg the green glow would turn blue. It was kind of a neat little warning.

The car also comes with optional paddle shifting. The transmission has two drive positions, your normal "D" and a "S" for "Sport." This sport mod enables the paddle shifters. You can upshift long before the auto trans would normally for better FE, and yet when you stop it will go back to 1st gear for you. This would make this car very easy to hypermile.

All and all I like this car far better than the Prius I tested, and it comes with out the smugness. It's a good value for $19,800, but I will not be giving up my Metro for it anytime soon.

"Chicks dig me and guys think I'm cool."

Does anybody have a cousin in China or Pakistan, who owns a barge, that can ship the "new" Geos over here? Just get them from China to say....San Francisco, and I'll drive one home from there!!
