My trip to Michigan

Fear the Mullet

Me, the wife, and the dog all went on a road trip Sunday to see member Sam about some parts....
Used Metro Parts

At first we were traveling at 70 MPH, but then I started to smell oil. I knew my front crank seal was bad, but not that bad! I stopped and checked the oil and found oil everywhere. The belt was also oil soaked and the engine was a quart low. I topped it off and explained to the wife that I had to maintain a speed of 55 MPH to control oil loss. This seemed to be the trick. I was still losing oil, but not that bad.

The trip was 340 miles one way. I did the entire round trip on 13 gallons of gas :thumb

Good numbers, but it was scary. Driving 55 MPH on the interstate is bad enough, but in Michigan, the speed limit is 70 which translates to 90 MPH for SUV drivers. We were passed on the right, the left, and even the shoulder by every car on the road. You could see them coming up on you from the rear view mirror and then scramble when they came up on me. The sad part was that I94 had a posted speed limit of 55 MPH through Detroit, but almost everyone on that highway were going 70+ MPH. The Detroit area is also very dirty. There were mounds of trash accumulated on the highway medians and shoulders. There were no signs of Police either in the Detroit area.

Anyway, after meeting Sam, I got some stuff for Christine...............

A non-running engine complete with head and oil pan (no intake).
Side moldings for my doors and area behind the doors.
A passenger side mirror.
A new heater control unit with blower fan switch.
2 side windows just in case I need them one day.

I plan on rebuilding this engine over the summer. The block will be punched out .020 and shaved. My port and polished head with the 3Tech cam and gear found in the head project thread will go on this block also. After the block is stripped, the head from my project and the block will be hot tanked and cleaned like new. The head will also be shaved slightly.

I will then paint this completed engine and have it ready by winter. Come winter, Christine will be put out of commission. I will remove the engine and trans and strip the interior. The entire body will be re-worked and the car restored to better than new condition. Then I can drop in the new power plant.

Before this, I am thinking I will fix my oil leak and drop in my economy cam and gear to make it through the summer months.

I'm very fortunate where I am, junkyards everywhere with metros poking out on every hole.

this reminds me about what happened about 9 months ago, while working for a contractor at a large plant.a boy got to close to the cars while cutting grass and flying rocks broke out the back side window of my geo and the side window of the truck parked next to me i told one of the big shots at the plant that i had another one at home and if they gave me $30 i would put it in untill a found another one at the junk yard,he said no they would take care of it.About two weeks later after they replaced the truck owners window .they gave me a check for the same money it cost to replace the truck window, and asked me if it was enough ,i said sure . the check was for $225.

Sounds like you need to buy another Metro to use until Christine is fixed! Do you have a backup ready?
