Hey everyone, I wanted to ask the technical people here whether this car is a good idea for me. I love diesel engines. I love metros. I'm worried it will be beyond what I can handle technically though. It does seem solid. There's a Diesel Geo Metro on eBay right now. This one has a really nice nice conversion from the looks of things. I only need to use it in the city. I think adding a turbo to it would be awesome.

Please have a look at let me know if you have a second....: eBay Motors: Geo : Metro DIESEL, ENGINE by Subaru Robin (item 230338147682 end time May-03-09 18:00:00 PDT)

I would like to get some opinions about it in general too. How cool!!!!!

Nice conversion, but I think that motor would be better suited to a bike.

The engine only produces 9.4 horsepower at 3600 rpm which is way too low to get out of an emergency situation. I noticed the engine is very loud in the videos.

If gasoline was selling for $50 a gallon and you didn't mind wearing earplugs while driving, I would say it's worth a look lol

It all depends on what you want to do with it.

PushnFords

I might have missed it in the auction, but I'd ask how long it takes to accelerate to 40mph and then drive your current vehicle like that...see what the response is of people around you. I live in a small town so it wouldn't be a problem here...but other places I have driven it would be inspiring road rage and you might be needing a pushbar on the rear bumper!

I used to drive classic cars as daily drivers. They are loud, a little uncomfortable, no A/C, heaters aren't always the best, no cruise, etc. But I like them and the novelty of driving them so it was worth the trade off to me. You'd have to decide if these things would make it worth it to you to drive that Metro.

In this particular situation I would not consider the fuel economy that much of a benefit to the cost of owning that Metro. When I used to work at auto parts stores I'd see people spending hundreds of dollars hoping to get a 1-2mpg increase in economy...without ever doing the math to calculate how long of a payoff it actually takes. I have no idea how many annual miles of city driving you do, so I'll lay it out for you to plug in the numbers:

Gas Powered Metro:
I'm going to use 35mpg city mileage and 8,000 annual miles driven.

8,000/35 = 228.57 gallons
228.57 gallons * $1.913 = $437.25 annual gas costs

Diesel Powered Metro

8,000/70 = 114.29 gallons
114.29 gallons * $2.139 = $244.47 annual diesel costs

Those are actual fuel prices taken from the Flying J website BTW. So...that diesel powered Metro might save you $198.72 a year IF it replaced your current vehicle. If you buy it in addition to your current vehicle it would cost you around $50 a year assuming insurance is $15 a month and tags are $63 which is what I pay on my Metro.

Keep us posted on what you do!

pushing fords, you hit the nail on the head. Got to take everything in account, not the end result.

I think I rather have the 3 cylinder kubta diesel engine with a small turbo.

Lets keep in mind diesel is now more than gasoline.

Now you're talking. I had a 198-something VW Jetta TD years ago that was fantastic. Good power, great mileage and I had over 300k on it when I got rid of it when the head gasket went and I was moving. A 3-cyl turbo diesel in a metro would rock.
