How fast should I go?; make car last longer

I am being told all kinds of advice since I got my geo and just want to listen to the right stuff and kinda wonder if my thoughts are right or not.
Is it harder on the geo to push it and take it to 70 mph in a 70 mph zone, rather than going 60 mph which seems less stressful on the car and me. Or is it better on the motor to push it and go 70? :(

Are you using an auto transmission? That's a known issue about them...

I have one... down here there not much places to go that faster... but I found that optimal speed for my engine using that Auto Trans. is between 40 and 50 miles an hour as maximum (however I'm using 185/60R13 tires... 10 points less on usual tire profile).

definitely if you want to go faster... have to get a geo with manual transmission because automatic does not help to cruise at high speeds nor the car performance/fuel mileage.

:)

They can handle 70 no problem, my aunt used to drive my car 75mph everyday back and fourth to work. The motor has 170k on it now and is due for a rebuild so knowing that I've been pushing this motor pretty hard and it can go 85 without problems. But with it's skinny little wheel base it does get a bit shaky. Obviously 60 is better on a motor than 70 but that goes for any car not just a Geo.

right, mine has the same mileage... and because of that if you go at 75mph you are going to feel it on your fuel consumption for sure.

Definitely the car is going to handle it, but "pudeluvr" was talking about how stressful for the engine is. which I totally agreed.

Cheers! :drink

I want my Metro to last a long time and I like saving fuel, so I never drive faster than 60 MPH. Higher speeds at sustained times is really not good for the G10.

:gp I agree, it is very hard to do though!!!

On a side note, has anyone here buried it to see your what your top speed is? I was on a level highway, no wind, and got it up to 95 mph (the needle was about a half inch from the last mark which is 90) Mine has been fully aligned, and has four new balanced tires so the shaking was minimal, it was actually quite smooth! I just did it once, cause I didnt want to harm the motor, but at 95 mph in 5th gear you are turning 5000-5100 RPMs and around 85 MPH your at 4700-4800. "FYI"

Ohh for you guys that dont have a tach, and are looking at getting your best mileage (3 cylinder, 5 speed manuals only), at 55 mph in 5th gear you are turning 2500-2600 RPMs and just 10 mph more at 65 MPH your are turning 3200 RPMs, thats 700 RPMs for only 10 more mph, GO 55!!!!!

Yeah I usually never drive faster than 68mph but every once in a while I'll kick it up to 75- 80 for a few seconds. It helps re-assure me even though I'm getting passed, it's only because I choose to ^o) haha.
