With no hypermiling techniques you should average 48 mpg. I own a 1990 hatchback and get about that, although sometimes when I'm driving no faster than 60mph on the highway I can average close to 51 mpg. My best tank was 52 mpg and my worst was 44mpg. For the past year I've averaged 48mpg. There are ways of course to improve your mpg, most notably through your driving habits. Coasting to stops, slow acceleration, 55-60mph on the highway, etc. Another way is to have 13 inch rims on the car. Mine has 12 inch rims, so the bigger rims help you cruise better at higher speeds with better fuel efficiency.

Oh, and that's assuming your valves are functional and you have proper compression, with no issues with your oxygen sensor or catconverter.

Welcome to the forum, bluefever!

Johnny Mullet has a '98 which is getting mileage in the 50/60s. Click Here.

Even with modifications my 3 cyl., 5 speed, '90 is getting 52 highway at 60-65 mph. Still as Cobb and 90metro and others will attest you should expect something around 50 mpg depending on mods, maintenance, driving habits etc.

What were you looking at spending? Do look for rust in the entire frame. Most everything else is an easy fix, even replacing or rebuilding an engine. The Geos can be maintained with simple hand tools for the most part. I'm replacing both half shafts and the rack & pinion steering assy. next weekend and I only bought a large socket, tie rod remover and torque wrench as special tools.

Enjoy the forum...

A 95 and up car is never going to get what a 94 and down car will get, so a lot of these numbers don't apply to the car you're asking about. I had two cars the exact same spec as yours and I got 43 mpg in my normal 50/50 city/highway mix, 65 mph top speed. 50 mpg is possible on a pure highway trip. but my real life, daily number was a firm 43

Depends on how you drive it.

I have a '91 with 213K on it although the engine is in excellent condition. I drive 80 miles round trip to work which includes going through one small town at 35mph, three turns/stop signs, about 5 miles of additional city driving, and the rest is ran at 65-70mph. I have averaged a solid 43mpg over several tanks. I do absolutely no hypermiling techniques...just drive it.

I just crank mines and go. I do 90 percent highway, 10 percent city. I go about 5-10 over the posted highway limit and I let the car wax and wane with the grades. I am the slowest to leave a stop sign or light. I shift a few hundred rpms after the shift light and use a lower gear for speed than most members do here. I am sure I could break 50 with some timmming adjustments and no ac, plus packing my lunch.

Short trips kill fuel economy, like my mile drive to a local subway. Thats 2mpg I eat for leaving my workplace for a peaceful lunch.

You might be able to get an extra mpg from unloading the junk in your car, back seat and trim panels. I like a full size spare as I can drive a lot with little notice and love a real braker bar, hydrollic floor jack vs the standard issues that came with the car in the event of a flat.
