scary mileage 68.5mpg

i've been breaking in the rebuilt 'stock' engine this week .... 1.0, manual, hatchback w/326k .... and in spite of the oil phart problem which persists but may be getting better ..... the engine is performing very well. i just did the third fill up and calc'd the mileage. i used 4.0 gallons for 274 miles. i keep looking for something wrong ... was the tank completely filled? my gas gauge is erratic sometimes. has the odometer gone crazy? did i fill up and not record it? i don't think so. it comes out to 68.5mpg! the first fill up produced 48.4mpg .... the second 41.5 because it did a lot of idling and smog certification. if i figure out my mistakes i'll report them.

i doubt i'll ever duplicate this but who knows? i was driving very steadily trying to test the speeds at which the oil puffs would occur. i started at 55 and then added 1-2 mph for each cycle. i was driving on freeway .... with the wind and then back into the wind ...... in a 10 mile loop. i did many many cycles and finally got the puffs to stop while maintaining just under 65mph.

out of curiosity, a friend and i will do a leak down tomorrow if we get the time. it seems like the rings may be seating finally .... at almost 600 miles.

One tank will never give you an accurate MPG reading. After 3 tanks, let us know the numbers.

Story I heard in High School was of a teacher that kept records of his mileage and shared them with his class. Some students decided to prank him and 1st siphoned off a gallon for a month and then added a gallon for a month - before letting him in on the joke.

Oh, yes, to be a little redundant, on my vacation I got a best of 58 and worst of 42 in town, avg. 52 highway and 51 overall. I've never had 58 mpg before. Who knows... B-)

thanks johnny and bb,

it was an amazing [to me] 68.5, not 58, and i doubt that i'll be able to do it again too though somewhere down the line i might try. i don't think anyone's messin' with me and the average / range is the key indeed.

i just posted an update under projects. we did a compression and leakdown .... 175psi and 2-3psi differential all cylinders. out of curiosity i wish i'd done the tests on the new engine before the break in.

the oil pharts have stopped [ i now believe they were caused by initial blowby] and now i'm very concerned about the lean fuel mix ..... the spark plugs are white. i'm hoping for less mpgs and better balance of fuel / air. i checked for vac leaks and any other changes but haven't found any. i need to check to see if we actually got the stock cam i wanted.

4 gallons is only 1/3 of a tank, too much room for error there. It holds a little over 11 gallons, I rarely get less than 10. As Johnny pointed out, you really need the before and after tanks too as you never know if it's truly full. Once you've got three tanks of 10 gallons each that are pretty much the same, then you can trust the middle one.

Still new, but learning...

Im not sure if I should post this here or make a new thread..
My car has been getting great mileage (I'm canadian, so we do L/100km, but I've used an online converter to get MPGs) with no mods that I'm aware of. I inflated my tires (they were 25 psi under max, now are at max) and put new brakes on. I drive somewhat sensibly, but don't use any drastic hypermiling techniques on a regular basis. I rarely run my car with it shut of, for example, due to it being illegal where I am.
Anyway, its a 91 Sprint, 3cyl 1L 5 spd 5 dr, and I'm reliably getting well above 40 mpg (45 to 48 mostly) driving only in the city, lots of idling. Highway, on a long trip, I got 60 mpg on one tank, and I think better than that on another. This is with a loaded car (one human passenger, one canine passenger and a whole lot of junk/food/etc). Am I doing my math wrong, or is this car just amazing? I'd love to actually TRY to get good mileage and see how well I could do. Jeez. Love it!

they are exceptional! and your numbers are probably right. i always averaged in the mid 40s but there have been astounding and often surprising instances. weight is usually not the most limiting factor .... limited speed and accelerations and well tuned engine.

I'm a little skeptical that your getting nearly 70mpg on a stock rebuild with 300K+ miles on it. I have a G10 motor with almost 40k on it manual trans, no AC, power nothing. I can't break the 50mpg mark, and I've been driving like a damn grandma trying to get there. Unless you've done some kind of serious modification to it that I don't know about, I don't see how that's possible.

hdsheena, 60 mpg is do-able for a single tank fillup because so many variables exist. Over time the numbers should be around 48-50 mpg (for non-XFI models). Variables include quality of the gas at fillup, tire inflation, weight of the car INCLUDING driver, highway vs. city driving, compression, proper air inflow, timing, 55 horsepower (standard) vs. 49 hp (XFI models), and most importantly your driving habits.

I personally drive a 1990 Geo Metro hatchback with 5 speed transmission with only 43k original miles. After a major tuneup I've been averaging about 50 mpg, with a low standard deviation (high of 52.7 low of 48.3). I have absolutely ZERO modifications to the car.....it's about as stock as you can get, and I also don't have A/C. I added a Jensen cd player, which probably drags down the horsepower (ha!) but that's about it.

On the flipside, read about Johnny Mullet's modifications to his 98 Metro 3 cylinder 5 speed. I think he averages close to or above 60 mpg.

Thanks for the post. It's all about the mpgs. Screw foreign oil, screw the Saudis, screw Hugo Chavez, and screw paying more than $20 to fillup my tank at the pump! Happy 4th to everybody!
