Look this wonderful toy from AutoMeter... MPG and Fuel Consumption Gauge Available at Jegs.com as part of the father's day sale I think is cheap for it's quality and utility P.D It works with OBD-II engines only (95-01 Metro in this case)

I submitted a question to see if it will work with all OBDII ports of just the 2004 and up they specify. |

All Metros have OBD, what they're talking about here is OBD2, 96 and newer. |

I just got my response from Jeg's. It reads as follows "Hello and thanks for your interest in Jegs High Performance, The part number 105-9100 is designed to work with some vehicles 2004 and newer but it will not work with vehicles 2003 and older. I apologize that it would not work on your vehicle, I looked for an alternative that would work on your 97 model but I did not really see anything that compared to the Ecometer." So, do any of the mechanics (shade tree or pro) we have around here know why this might be? Has the OBDII port changed? |

The port remained the same, The operating system is different. Like windows compared to Mac. And the pin outs changed as well. I was looking at it earlier for my daughters 200 Jetta. I got the same reply. A company named PLX has a unit called the Kiwi MPG. Similar application, all OBDII compatible, right at $100 delivered. Looks like an Ipod kind of gadget too, so that's a selling point for 30 something girls. Kiwi MPG or you could get the Scangauge II Scangauge II Edited by metroschultz, Jun 16 2009, 10:19 AM.

I had a scan guage 2. Great tool, plus it read and cleared engine codes. I used mines on my scion xa to see the water temp for when the cold engine light went out, when the rad fan came on and cost per mile by entering the price of fuel at a fill up. It had an hp meter too, but it was off. Best of all, you can change the color of the screen from 1 of 256 colors to match your dash board. When I was running echo wheels and tires I used the programmable mph meter to get my correct speed I was traveling. Needless to say, they lowered my fuel economy. It gave instant, average fuel economy, load, throttle position, vacuum and or boost reading, voltage, etc. Even gallons per hour of fuel. Of all I learned 40mph in 4th gave best fuel economy and drafting works. It was funny to do 80mph behind a semi, get 45mpg and see I am using 2.5 gallons an hour. I used .15 at idle once warmmed up, .75 when cold at idle. |

Negative. None of them mentioned so far will work on OBDI cars. I like the scangauge, but it's more than I am willing to pay. I might have to look into that KIWI. I like that, and the price is a lot better. |

yea us obd 1 metro owners just pop a fuse into the diagnostic port to read our codes, and we unhook the battery to clear them... i love not haveing to go to Advanced Auto to have my car read... if obd1 guys need something to track MPGs a vacume guage works good. just keep it on the lower end for best fuel economy... myself i use an air-fuel ratio and going to invest in a vacum guage ASAP. |
