MPG w/ an auto?

Hi all-

I'm new to the forum, as I just bought a 93 Geo Metro, but w/ the auto. How much have people w/ auto's averaged? Is it always as bad as 35 MPG? I say bad in relation to these cars... as opposed to my truck that gets 18-20 ;-)

Other than that fact, the car is in pretty nice shape. Has 93.6k on it but was a FL car so has no rust. Underside is clean/beautiful.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, torchmaro! :coffee

Yea, from what I've read it's bad :evillol

Seriously, keep it clean with Seafoam, maybe replace the wheel bearings, add an air dam, inflate the tires +3-4 psi and other such suggestions, like samp9983s, and more on both our forum and ecomodder.com and you will be pushing the 40s. :lol

Thanks!

Well, in relation to what I'm driving now even 35 MPG would be a lot better than what I'm getting.

Not to jump the gun, but doing a swap to a 5spd, how hard would it be?

Stop and go city traffic is a killer of mileage of the automatics and is exacerbated by the fact that stick cars have the added advantage of the over drive 5th gear. 36 in town and a little over 41highway(60 mph average) is the best I have squeezed out of my car, but these numbers didn't come without a considerable readjustment of my driving style. My xfi gets me 50 plus without even trying, so when I first got my auto tranny car, it took me a while to figure out the best way to drive it to get better mileage out of it. A lead foot, hurry up and go driving style will cause these numbers to drop like a rock. So if mid to upper 30's isn't enough for you, your only option is a stick. Oh, by the way, welcome to the site! :cheers

I have two Metros and one is a 1992 automatic with the 1.0 liter 3 cyl. Just recently, I drove 66 miles after filling to overflowing, and then refilled (again to overflowing) just to check the mileage. The round trip was slow country driving, with few stops and some hills. I drove 45 to 50 mph the whole route. It took only 1.026 gallons te refill. I do not seriously suspect I was getting 60 mpg, but I do suspect I was getting in the low 50's. I do a longer trip to test the mileage again as soon as i get a chance. My previous best mileage from this car was 46 mpg last summer.

Mine has an avg of 37 MPG. That is with stop and go city traffic, but with the motor running as hard as it does on the interstate I don't think MPG would do so well there.

bennie442 is right about the stick being much better. My 94 XFI hasn't gotten under 49MPG and is running about 52 usually. Never going over 65 mph & a lot of city driving. That's stock, no mods. Love my poor man's hybrid!

I have never swapped one in a Metro, but it isn't a hole lot of fun. There is alot of work involved with a swap. You would need pedals, cables and rods, new flywheel, new ECM, might need new axels, not to mention a transmission, clutch kit, and a whole lot of time. I have done it before, and I can tell you that it is not a fun project.
