Well, I thought I would introduce myself by way of introducing my car!

Some time last year I bought myself an '89 Geo Metro, with the intent of taking it's manual transmission and putting it in a newer '94 Geo Metro. (Turns out that the transmission in the '89 was junk after 3K miles, so it's a good thing I didn't do it!) Once I had the '89 in my possession, however, I realized the body was in pretty good shape so I decided instead to restore it.

So far I have rebuilt the engine (I painted it, just for fun) and only recently I swapped out the bad transmission of the '89 with a spare manual I had from a '94. The spline count on the clutch plate of the '94 is different than the '89, so I bought a new clutch kit, which was alright since the old one was slipping a lot anyways. Thankfully the CV shafts were the same from '89 to '94, so I didn't need new ones.

The car still needs quite a bit of work, and I am in college (Mechanical Engineering) so I don't get a lot of time (or money!) to work on it, but I have high hopes and dreams. You can find me over at the ecomodder forum (same name) every once in a while talking about some mods, or you can follow my flickr account, where I post pictures of it, or you can follow the blog I made for it.

That's it! Look out, forum, here I come!

Here it is getting ready for a special hyper-miling run from eastern Nebraska to central Colorado:

Welcome to the forum, IHeartGeos! :coffee
Not many of us on tonight, eh. I like the aero mods. What's the gas mileage with the tape and cardboard, may I ask?
I went with an air dam and recently back to warm air. Ditched the OEM intake.
:hmm If you got taped in and had a 60 gallon tank you could drive cross country non-stop!
I hope your studies are going well...

Well, with the cardboard mods it seems I got somewhere over 50mpg for going up to Colorado (from Nebraska) and just under 60mpg on the way back down. I plan to make some of those mods more permanent, but that was just a "for fun" project.

I have been putting off any work on the Geo because I wanted to wait until I got a camera, so I could document the progress, and my camera will be here at the end of the week, I hope.

One thing I wondered was this: I put a cardboard piece over the windshield wiper section, to lower the angle of attack at that point, and I came up with an interesting design for a permanent piece. Basically a flap thing that pops up when you need to use the wipers, but otherwise makes the slope a bit better. I'm not sure that point is worth fiddling with, aerodynamics-wise.

I have a lot of plans for over the summer, which is more than half way done for me, so we will see how much I get done!

If you see him, tell him I said hello.

Ever heard of a famous Nebraskan naturalist named Loren Eiseley?

dimetrodon, I looked up a picture of him, but I don't recognize him. Picture was pretty grainy, so maybe this fall...

UNL is a pretty rockin' place for engineers, and I just got in on the tail end of a mini baja build group, making it even more fun! If you go to UNL this fall, I will be the nerdy guy: Glasses, facial hair, ti-89 tucked in my front pocket.
