Hello everyone. I'm John from Ohio. I just purchased my first Geo Metro on June 13 for $400. It's a 1993 Geo Metro base model, 4 door hatchback, with a 5-speed transmission. The frame was rusted out very badly on the driver's side and there was a large leak on the output shaft oil seal on the driver side of the transmission. (Sadly I didn't realize how large the leak was until I had already driven it a few times with very very little gear oil in it, thankfully it survived). It also had a very bad exhaust leak as well. Someone removed the resonator and tried to weld up a straight pipe, they didn't do a very good job and ended up using one of those universal flexible exhaust repair pipes, which caused the leak. The former owner claimed he got in the 40's with it but I soon found out he was lying. The first 110 miles, with 70 of those being on the highway, brought only 23.88 miles per gallon. Quickly tracked down the problem, someone put a 94 or up junkyard engine in it along with the throttle body and intake manifold. Needless to say the wiring didn't match up at all. The MAP sensor and manifold temperature sensor wasn't even plugged in! None of the EVAP stuff was either. However, a trip to the junkyard cost me $140 got me the right throttle body, intake manifold, and a complete exhuast, header to muffer (which included a new looking aftermarket catalytic converter). I also got the air filter housing and the MAP sensor off of that junkyard card along with a few other nic-nacks. I'm glad I got the MAP sensor though, mine didn't need replaced but they want $300 for a new one! That took care of the engine problem, and my dad and I repaired and welded the frame for probably $20 total and I spent an extra $30 on a driver side tie rod, it needed one badly. Then took it to the shop for a front end alignment last wednesday and its good to go now! Put brand new 155/80R13 tires on it as well, now my RPMs are a tad lower than even an XFi's .Total cost however so far is around $850, that includes registration fees and all that. But it seems to be running great now. Just have to take care of a few rust spots and dents, but thats all cosmetic. I'm hoping to get an MPGuino soon as well. I've been wanting a Metro for a long time now, and I finally got one. I look forward to modding this and learning to drive it so I can get as high mileage as possible. I've learned a lot from GasSavers.org, hopefully I can learn a few specifics from this place as well! |

Welcome to the site John from Ohio. We have quite a few Ohioans here on the board ![]() That is a great story how you actually took the time to figure out the car issues and really start to start saving fuel with the Metro! My Metro was a basket case also. Engine, trans, frame, exhaust, etc but I got it all fixed up minus some body work and it runs and drives like a new car. I have almost $1000.00 invested including purchase price and it paid me back 5 times over already in 15 months with fuel savings ![]() Hope you seen this thread........... http://geometroforum.com/topic/1243951/ Edited by Johnny Mullet, Jul 2 2009, 09:12 PM.
