Hey guys/gals I'm the proud, almost owner, of a 1994 Metro 3 banger. I say almost, because the seller can't find the title so we are waiting until Monday to finish the transaction. SO by the time most of you read this, i hopefully will be rockin the Metro. It's black, rusty, but mechanically perfect. With your help, i hope to make it like new again! It'll be my first foray into auto body work (as well as my daily commuter since my lease mileage is up but i still have 20 months left on the leased car...) Thanks guys! Aaron |

Thanks for the welcome! Its actually a 3 speed auto, i would have preferred a manual trans, but these cars are pretty hard to find around here in good shape for cheap, so i wasn't gonna be too picky. I paid 650 for this one. http://picasaweb.google.com/J.Millheim/1994GeoMetro02# there are some pics As you can see, needs some work, but other than the rust, tis gold. Aaron |

Hi Aaron, Congrats on your purchase. I know you must be excited, but before you sign on the dotted line, you should do a check of two particular areas for rust. It is the two areas just below the drive shafts where the control arms mount (left and right). Metros are prone to rust here and a failure could cause loss of a wheel and loss of control of the car! If there is a problem here, it can be fixed, but finding a welder capable and willing to fix this might be a problem. Don't want to burst any bubbles, but it's worth mentioning. My two cents, Larry |

Hey i took your advice and it saved me some loot! They were still dallying with the title issue this morning so i checked the car out a bit better and saw that there was indeed rust taking over under neath right where you said it'd be. I bailed on it. Got another metro lined up though, checking it out tomorrow. Its a 1998 with a 5 sp. Has had the underbody reinforced at the likely rust areas. Seems like a pretty great car. I'll let you guys know more if i get it! Thanks a million for the advice so far, you should charge for registration to this site lol Aaron Edited by Aaron, Jul 7 2009, 07:17 PM.

Sometimes these problem areas are covered with rubberized undercoating and the rust is well hidden. Don't be afraid to poke around with your finger. If it has already been repaired, examine the repair and make sure it's structurally sound. Good luck ![]() |

Looks like another person saved by the forum! Let's hope his next purchase fairs better. I know alot of unscrupulous people out there with full knowledge of the rust problems bubble gum and taping them together and hoping they sell to unsuspecting buyers. Too bad...... |

well i bought one today! its a 1998 Chevy metro 3 cyl 5 sp. I love it, has a few issues but i was looking in the price range that has those types of things. The control arm area was reinforced though and there isn't much rust under the car at all. Very little rust on the car really. Looks like he drove it through a baja or something though, sand everywhere. The hood didn't latch, was just a little spring, fixed that quick. The issues that drive me nuts are the fact that the door locks don't match the ignition and there isn't a key for the doors... so i can't lock my doors. The rear hatch's lock is busted out like someone tried to break in the muffler is gone, needs exhaust. A wheel is missing, is running on the donut spare. Leaks oil out of the timing cover area. Thats all the problems. If anyone has quick fixes or good search terms to use to fix this stuff, i'll be happy to read more up on it. |

As far as the locks go, you can get a set of locks for the doors and hatch from a junkyard and replace them, but then you have 2 keys unless you want to do an ignition swap also. Muffler should not be much of a problem, but inspect the entire exhaust and also tap on the cat converter and listen for a rattling noise inside. Junkyard for a wheel of find 4 wheels/tires from any of the vehicles in this list......... http://geometroforum.com/topic/701184/ The timing cover will need to come off to find the leak. I bet it's the cam seal. You can see a teardown on my 1998, but disregard removing the camshaft if doing it in-engine.................. http://geometroforum.com/topic/1565837/ Good luck and keep us posted! Feel free to start your very own thread in the "Project Forum" if you plan on taking pics and documenting your repairs and mods. |

Welcome Aaron- Just address one small problem at a time. These vehicles will keep going until you address all the small problems (then you'll have to start all over again at the top of the list!). Be sure to change your fluids and filters as well as complete a tune up. There is a lot of good information on this forum for anyone that has an interest in these vehicles. If you have any questions, we'll try our best to assist. Edward |
