Ok, let's start with the car, found on craigslist of course, it's a '92 metro lsi with 122,000 on it. Now I'm no mathematician but if the national average is 12,000mi per year this car should have closer to 200k. Though I could be wrong maybe it was rolled over twice, but if it was it was darn well maintained. I'm not going to bother posting pics until it's painted because right now it's just one big red blister. Interior-wise it's about 90% perfect, couple chips and scratches in the plastic nothing I'm going to worry about. Mechanically it seems ok, had a minor coolant leak, the kid I bought it from didn't seem to know about that (hmmm..), bought a hose clamp and the guys at baxter's threw the hose in for free. The only other problem is the fuel filter (I think). The car dies when the brakes are applied unless you're really gentle, and at first I thought that it was the gas sloshing forward and uncovering the pump but I had just under a half a tank so that shouldn't do it right? Oh crap, what if my fuel gauge ain't working? Maybe I have no gas? Oh well, I already reserved the filter, I'll fill the tank with premium after I change it and hope for the best. Oh yeah and I don't really know squat about automotive repair so I apologize now for holding up the class. See ya in the forums. |

Welcome mitchro! No need to apologize for anything, it's your forum, our forum, it's what it all about. I filled my tank after 200 miles a few times just to get an idea what mileage I was getting and how the gauge worked. Check out: Chilton gas tank size mistake? Since the car is new-to-you I'd recommend at least a tune up, Seafoam Maintenance and compression check. Your fuel filter should require no more than a 10mm socket or box end wrench and pliers, maybe a screwdriver. I used vice grips to gently squeeze the 'in line' to cut off fuel flow. It is located under the car, under/behind the drivers seat. Good to change it anyway. Someone else likely has a good solution for the dying and will post soon. I check in every day - no life. I'm thinking the Exhaust Gas Recycling (EGR) ports may be clogged and perhaps the Catalytic converter may be going, you'd smell rotten eggs. The good news is these engines are VERY easy to work on. IF you want to. Tools can be gotten at Harbor Freight (timing light) for reasonable $$ and the forum is here.

If the car only dies when you hit the brakes hard, something with your vacuum booster is faulty. It is probably pulling too much vacuum, killing the engine. |

awesome, thanks for the input, I changed the fuel filter and put a tank of premium in it and drove around for a couple hours trying to recreate what happened and so far so good! Vacuum does sound much more likely, I checked all my lines earlier and they looked good. Well it runs for now, I think I'll take it to a trusted mechanic next week for a post-purchase(doh!) inspection. If I have any more problems I'll post them over in the proper area of the forum and I'll get the pictures soon. |

Welcome to the forum. Yeah, there is nothing like before and after pics. It helps you to stay encouraged when you get fed up with the car. |
