I finally got over 40 mpg with my 216,000mi, broken EGR, check engine light on, rich running, 4cyl AUTO!!! I couldn't be happier with the little purple egg :rocker I Seafoamed the motor and gas tank, fresh 10w-30 Valvoline Maxlife, and a simple tune up (wires, plugs, cap, rotor). Now I can be a proud Metro driver :drool

I am sure you can easily beat that. Now try accelerating a tad slower and going 5 under the posted limit. Make sure your tires are fully inflated to the tire max psi and you have a clean air filter. Tint the windows and try not using the ac. If you do not use ac, try blocking half the grill where the radiator does not exist and the gap between the hood and bumper.

How would you go about cleaning out an EGR? And what Plugs and Wires would you recommend?

use ngk plugs the standerd kind. egr port can be cleaned with exhaust manifold off or egr valve off and use coat hanger. like john says, if you remove egr and start engine you should hear exhaust leek from port.

I used the standard 1.99ish NGK plugs, and Advance auto cheapo x-act wires. I don't know if my EGR is clogged or not, but the plunger that is supposed to move on it doesn't budge. I just can't justify the $120 for a new one.

Chances are you don't need to buy a new EGR, just clean the carbon out of the one you have. :thumb

Someone recommended robietherobot.com plug wires for $49 and $59 for Firebraided 8mm wires available in Black, Blue, Red, Yellow, (Firebraid Purple) and Chrome. My choice of plugs is unpopular so I won't mention it. ;)
