One-forty's retarded; Trip to the muffler shop

Well I got my CA-legal direct fit cat and tried to install it yesterday. It just didn't want to fit. So naturally I tried to force it... It is at a local muffler shop getting a broken bolt removed from the manifold, and hopefully will actually get installed correctly. My mileage looks like this- I refill every two days (that's 280 miles). I put in 7.5 gallons to fill it up ($23.00 here in So-Cal). That would appear to give me about 37mpg. I am hoping that some of that will change with the new oxygen sensor I installed. I always drive at 60 mph, and have over 3500 miles on the rebuilt engine.
When I had the car up, yesterday I noticed that I could force the front wheels to move left or right by about 3/4". It seemed like the play was inside the rack. I believe this is what caused one of the 12" tires to grenade on the freeway recently. I sure it is killing on my mileage, too. By the way, I put those rx7 spare alloys on in place of the 12"s- they are awesome! I am going to post pictures of my rig when I get it back.
Thank you for all your help, guys!

Your manual Rack and Pinion (R&P) has an adjustment on it. It is at the firewall, under a rubber cap and is like a 1" square bolt. It will adjust the tightness or your steering. That may help.

I got a $35 R&P from a pick-n-pull (the cheap way to go :thumb ), however it had a 1/2 inch of play in the steering wheel. My current R&P has 1/2 inch of play on the right side. I sent the junk yard R&P to Garo Steering in Florida ($20) and they replaced a part for $45, while rebuilding it for $95 and $15 to ship. So, for $125 you might be able to get it re-manufactured. They promise a 24 hour turn around time on eBay. :deal

If you don't want much down time and don't want to mess with a pick-n-pull I can send Garo my R&P and they can send the Reman to you. Click: Garo Steering. I'll have the Reman in this weekend. :drool

if that is accurate ,
you should not drive the car anymore until you find out why and repair it , imho

if the wheel s have 3/4" steering linkage play independent of the other wheel , look closely at the inner tie rod ends .

if you can grab the top and bottom of the wheel and you have 3/4" wiggle , look at wheel bearing s , and lower ball joint for the play
or , possible very very sloppy strut if the top and bottom of the strut can flex in relation to them selves .

if the wheels move together , with no play wheel to wheel
that is normal, they will move much more than you noticed .

allegedly CA legal after market cat converters are right next to useless , good for tent stakes ,
you must get the cat from the manufacturer of the car or
mr check engine light will be back ....
NY has CA emission specifications, aftermarket cats never work here
