Redline??; At what speed is redline in each gear?

I was wondering since I don't have a tach, at what speed in each gear will I hit redline? I have a 93 metro XFI with 5 Speed and stock 12" wheels and stock size tires.

I would also like to know this for a regular 5 speed with 13" tires 155/80/13

If you are asking for the sake of economy, shift when the little green arrow lights on the dash. It's lit by the computer to give you a good compromise between, economy, power, and clean emmisions. 2500 to 3000 rpm is a good max range in any gear to keep the engine from having to work too hard, and things will last longer. I'm sure the Metro could do 6000 rpm "OK", but yikes! Remember that means the crankshaft is spinning 100 times per second.

My 94 LSI's tach marks redline at 6500 rpm. I don't know how it gets the reading, but would assume it's independent of speed, gear, and probably tire size.

Yes, redline is 6500 but it runs out of steam above 5500, XFI above 5000. The G10 is an inherently torquey engine, unless you're done some mods, there's not much point in taking it to redline.

To the original poster, I don't know. It's going to take someone who has added a tach to an XFI to find out for you.

'Redline? We don't got no stinking Redline!'
No, seriously, I had this question when I got tired of all the trucks in my hood tailgating the little Metro. I envisioned a Geo that drove like a regular car. :D I got a tachometer.

The shift light is indeed ~3000 rpm. Our engines develop max horsepower or 52 at 5700 rpm then it levels off and begins to drop off as Woodie points out. So, use the shift light and you'll never use your full horsepower but it will live longer and you'll get great gas mileage, as crankcase said. :thumb There is a rev. limiter. Irregardless of gas mileage, my G10 loves to purr in the 3500-5000 range.

It was in conversing with Adam at SuzukiRD that convinced me to get the racing header. As I recall they routinely lived in the 5-7000+ rpm range (racing). B-)

Without a tac it is tough, but when you no longer feel it pushing you back in your seat. Shift. It means you have run out of torque. That works for econo racing. But for econmy shift when the light comes on. When the torque falls off you are not accelerating at the optimum. And everything above that point is a waste.

I was just curious if anyone knew at what speed the engine would hit redline at in each gear. I know what the redline is for this car and I know what the shift light means. (I shift before that light usually)

According to that calculator it's:
31
57
84
118
142

I was going to say 30, 55, 85 based on tests in my '98 yesterday, so that's pretty damned close. I've got a different first gear and taller tires, so there was some wild assed head math going on. I also hate to rev it up like that, I never take it over 5K.
