If Geo Metro's could breed... I'd build a ranch up in Minnesota's Iron Range, build up a good sized herd and then wait for Peak Oil. :)

Well, the body restoration has begun. I look at this poor car and think to my self..........

"What normal person would attempt to revive this old rusty Metro."

Another long night staying after work :coffee

We had all the grinding done and then the metal was welded in place............

Posted Image

My friend at work is pretty handy with body work and he agreed to help out with my Metro restoration. we worked late into the night............

Posted Image

After grinding, Duraglass was used, and then shaped and sanded. After the duraglass, regular body filler was used to fill in the small imperfections................

Posted Image

Then both sides of the rocker panels got sheet metal welded in place and then a coat of duraglass.........

Posted Image

We called it a night and then the next night we finished the major patching and repairing. While he was doing that, I had to do something with the rear bumper. The rear mounts were totally rusted off and there were long lagbolts used to hold the bumper on. You can see those bolts on this pic from when I first got it.........

Posted Image

I removed the actual bumper from the skin and bolted it to the body by drilling holes and using bolts to secure it and then I used 90 degree brackets on the top and bottom to secure it............

Posted Image

The skin was then installed after the body work and paint. The body was prepped and cleaned and then a coat of primer..............

Posted Image

After the primer was sanded with fine grit, the panels were cleaned again and then painted with a rattle can mixed with the matching factory paint from a local paint shop..........

Posted Image

Here is the outcome from the paint................

Posted Image

I brought it home and was informed to return on our day off Monday for buffing and blending. I will be sure to post the final results when it's all done and ready to deliver to the Mr's :)

I have a quick question: you mentioned you put good tires on it, and then you painted the rims and shined the tires. What is your trick for painting rims with the tires on them? Did you put the tire shine stuff on the tires so overspray wouldn't stick? I have gray rims that need to be painted, but I do not want to remove the tires from the rims.

The way I did mine was to take a flap from a cardboard box, lay it on the rim and use your thumb to make an imprint of the wheel onto the cardboard. Cut the imprint out, and wal-li, you have the mask for painting the wheels, just move it as you paint the edges and then move to the remainder of wheel.

I did that freestyle! I am pretty decent with a rattle can :thumb

Here is a nice pic of the rocker panel all fixed up. I should have got a before picture............

Posted Image

The rear bumper skin was remounted on the car and secured so it fits correctly.........

Posted Image

Here is a general shot of the car, but it is not done. My friend at work has to blend it with the buffer and remove any overspray from the paint..............

This car is almost done and we will be taking it on a 10 hour drive to Rhode Island on our vacation real soon.

Anywhere there was a hole, sheetmetal was used to cover the hole and welded in place. The welds were ground flush and then duraglass (fiberglass reinforced bondo) was used to cover. This was then sanded and regular bondo was applied for the final touch and formed, sanded, primed, then painted.

Paint is "Azurite Blue" and available from a local paint shop who is going to mix me up a couple spray bombs. I love the blue also!
Thanks for the color info Mr Mullet!!
