i did bookmark that page , looks neat. . here in the north country winter is coming , some nights are in the mid to high 40s already , (must be the global warming) . so cold air intake it will be soon , another variable in the equation ..................................... if i were the prototype builder / test pilot on this adventure ... i would make a ductwork to fit 1/2 the guppy mouth out of galvanized 1/2 " mesh rabbit fencing , cut and wired together with whatever was around , and then i would drape that mesh with a single layer of fiberglass or if i was just doing a temporary project to see how it worked , maybe just cover the mesh with duct tape . sounds a little cheesy , but it would be good enough to see if the concept makes an improvement , prior to engineering a master piece that might not work well and may need to be field modified for ... whatever unknown reason . mine does not have AC so i have that big plate i could drill a big hole in to mount the contraption / duct work and it would fit real nice right behind the big open guppy mouth |

Good Ideas, thanks, mwebb. I don't have access to fiberglass/resin/catalyst right now. I have duct tape. I was working on something bolt-on. If I don't do a lot of painting work this weekend I'll get into the project and I'll post pictures. Have you seen what _Scratch_ is doing? http://www.teamswift.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=43571 |

also a good idea to wrap the front exhaust with some kind of insulation as you explain then teamswift thread ... that will improve the performance of your cat converter as well never thought of that what kind of insulation to you use ? ................................................. 90 degree angles in tubing screws up the flow ... i see absolutly zero reason to use a hood scoop that has a right angle in it when you could use the guppy mouth . there is much more usable area in the guppy mouth AND the guppy mouth intake will not screw up the CD of the car like the hood scoop will .... Guess I learned more about Hot Rods over the years than I thought. I used to have a Rat Fink model in my collection so that rubbed off. I mentioned COOL IT Thermo Tec Exhaust Insulating Wrap in passing, here. Moi? Headers = wrapping, period. IMHO I got 2" wide by 50' of the black stuff at a parts store and COOL IT's silver 2000 degree spray paint. Silver resembles chrome, something shiny in the engine bay, help control fraying. I wanted to keep the heat in the exhaust, like you said mwebb. I wrapped the pipe from the flange to the cat and it's held in place by one pipe clamp. To get full paint coverage I bought black tape and painted it silver, covering all the black.**I had enough left over to wrap and paint The Wife's OEM exhaust from the manifold to the Cat.** "the guppy mouth intake will not screw up the CD of the car like the hood scoop will .... " Agreed... I almost went with Cowl Induction, pulling air from the base of the windshield, using a paint sealed air filter to seal the space from the air cleaner to the hood. BUT I reasoned the shallow angle of the windshield may not provide the pressure I want. I'll get pics of the guppy ram air tomorrow, errr, Friday. |

As promised the new and improved collector made from a Shop Vac floor attachment. The duct tape on the collector was holding on a temp. flap, I noticed no change. There are 3 45 deg bents in the tube now and the white section of hose is smooth on the inside. Yes, I shortened the snorkel and am contemplating how to seal it better than Duct Tape. ![]() ![]() ![]() It still has a louder, more gutteral sound than the smaller 4" round collector. I moved the plate up out of the direct air flow.

looks like a work of art ... in progress i hope it improves fuel economy , i am anxious to see test results .................... those lurkers with marginal cat converters should have a look at that insulation on the exhaust , that can only improve cat converter efficiency and by so doing reduce emissions without any decrease in performance Edited by mwebb, Sep 25 2009, 11:12 PM.

I am also interested in the results. My 99 G10, IE the Dark Starr. Has the slotted front end. Is the Guppy mouth more aerodynamic? If so will it fit the 99? The header wrap should work really good. You want all the heat to go out the end of your pipe, not into the engine bay

A '95-'97 front bumper should fit yours, I've seen a lot of people on teamswift mention this as an aero mod for their '98 and ups, I wouldn't really know as mine is a '95 already, but I'd hazard a guess and say the "guppy" bumper is more aero dynamic.

Yup now I have to find one. And convince the SCTA that it is the one the car came with.
