Potential new project - Geo Metro rail buggy

OK, I have a '92 Metro I picked up as a parts car (there is no title for this car). It is an automatic that I was planning on selling on CL for $350. The windows don't go up and down, the interior is ripped up a bit, there is some surface rust and the driver's side door is beat up. The engine runs but smokes badly and the auto tranny has some problems. I don't know much about automatics but it feels like it would be a worn out clutch if it was a manual (just doesn't want to go). I was talking to some friends this morning about buying a dune buggy (what we used to call a woods buggy when I lived in WV) and we found ourselves outside looking at the Geo. I do have a manual transmission and gear shift linkage sitting in my "junk yard". It seems to me I could build a tube frame and transplant the drive train and stuff over to it. I haven't put much thought into it so far but I foresee a few problems like how to use a water cooled engine on something that may run over small trees (damaging a front mounted radiator) and how to handle an engine that needs an ECU (lots of extra wires and stuff compared to the old "slap a VW engine on a frame"). Anyway, this would have to be an extremely low cost build like most of my other projects. I don't have the $$$ sitting around to spend a lot building this thing. Anyone have any encouraging words or helpful ideas on building this monstrosity?

It is the red car (it looks a lot worse in person):

It is amazing what you can find when you just do a search on google <G>:

Further research and I find the above buggy was just posted on CL:

They have one not a DIY per se, but pretty cool. I want to make a "Pre-Runner" geo metro, but dune buggy looks like more fun. Can't you get a title for them?

I like the idea of making a Geo fly.

Not sure what that is...

Getting a title would be hard.

That looks way cool. I was wondering one thing. If the engine and trans are mounted in it backwards, does that mean he has 5 gears in revearse? :lol I used to run in to this problem with the do it yerselfers. They were convinced that you could take the Saginaw 4 spd gears and put them in a Corvair case. They would have just that problem. 4 gears in R. and 1 forward. It was really very amusing

Its funny, before I even clicked on the above links, I was thinking rear mounted radiator :D The hardest part would be as Murf said figuring out the reverse linkages, which you could do with a series of toggle links under the engine and up then to the normal shifter on the tranny. I think it would also have to be shielded from below.

I was also suprised when you pointed out the red Geo was the one you were talking about, when you said surface rust I thought for sure you were talking about the white one hahahha.

I haven't moved forward at all on the project. In fact, I may have moved backwards a bit because I put the red car on Craigslist again. I've gotten a few calls but no one has jumped on it yet. I think the lack of a title is killing the sale.
