Got 70 MPG?

So, I carpool to work each day with Unicron7. In an effort to help shave weight and bring back some lost gas mileage due to the extra weight (sorry buddy!), I've stripped the car some. What my stripping consists of: No carpet. No backseats or seat belts, ALL interior plastics removed EXCEPT for the dash, some tools removed, switched out trolley jack with a light weight scissor jack that came with my (now totalled) Eclipse GT, all of the thick tar removed from the floor pans (had to be between 20-30 lbs.) I still have A/C, that will be coming out. I plan on removing the dash as well. I have ZERO aero mods so far, but plan on blocking off about 75% of my front bumper, doing a cam back, and rear wheel well covers, MAYBE more earo dynamic hub caps as well. I have 175 series 13" tires pumped up to 45 psi, the rest of my list of mods is in my signature. I've also lightened my (already light) foot some more. I filled up yesterday on the way home at shell (I top off to the brim each time) and calculated my MPG's at 52.5. My person best was 53MPG back when I first got the car and was learning how to hypermile with no one in there and everything still in the car. I knew I was doing good seeing as I was hauling around a 180ish pound friend each day. Well, Unicron7 did not ride home with me yesterday, he did not ride with me to work this morning either. I logged 67.6 miles of just me yesterday from the gas station, to the bank to deposit money, to WalMart, to home, then back to the same gas station this morning. I topped the car off again and got... 57.812 MPG! I'm happy and I know my MKIV has got 60 MPG potential on a nearly STOCK motor. Not too shabby if I don't say so myself. Oh, and the car's Odometer read 189,926 when I pulled into work this morning as well. |

Excellent! If I may, installing the cam gear will make up for having a passenger along for a ride in terms of power and driving. IMHO Your 13" Moon Disk hub caps are $85 at hubcapmike.com/rdc01-13.html. Mine added 1 mpg to my mileage. Maybe passengers should push the car through the parking lot and into it's space?

Thanks for the link! That's the best deal I've seen for them so far! We were cracking jokes earlier at Unicron7's desk telling him he'll need to start running BESIDE the car on the way home from here on out! Oh, and I do plan on getting suprfly's eco head package, I've got the cam gear, but it's not installed (yet). Edited by starscream5000, Sep 18 2009, 09:41 AM.

I've been averaging darn near 50 mpg for the past year and a half in my 90 Metro. I drive 78 miles round trip each day, and probably average 65 mph doing it. Sometimes I catch myself hitting upwards of 72 mph just to keep the flow going. The car is stock (except for a cd player I installed) so I haven't experimented with weight reduction. My personal best mpg is 53.8 mpg. Also, my car only has 45k original miles, so I'm getting that perfectly broken in mileage now. One thing I can do is to lose weight off my butt !! I weigh 235 and should weigh 190. My kids call me Daddy McFatty!! |

Oh, that reminds me, a few months back I weighed 229.5 and I'm down to 200 right now and still loosing. Good luck! I find one of the best ways to save on gas is to not try maintaining the same speed while going up a hill. Drive around 60-65 on the parkways and keep your foot in the same throttle position to maintain that speed on a flat open road and keep it there, even going up the hills. My .02 |

Yep, it's called DWL. I don't know if the weight in a Geo is worth removing. Unless you drive in stop and go driving all day. (you shouldn't stop and go) you should just go, slowly. |

man, you are doing great! Next time you get tires, suggest going with the 155/80s. I just went from the 175s back to 155s and I see an improvement on coasting. If you could slow down to 45-50 mph max, you will be hitting 60 mpg easy. Maybe go back to lowest octane gas and drop the timing to 10 deg? |

^ Maybe, I'm seeing better MPG with the current setup, but I may go back to 12 degrees and 89 and see how that goes as I've never messed with mid grade gas before. I did have 155's on it before, but I figured the slightly taller tire would help out more than a little skinnier, shorter tire, what do you think? Sadly, my driving is on a parkway, so I can't go much slower than I already go without fear of getting an under-speeding ticket. I almost thought I was going to get one this morning chugging up a hill doing 50 MPH in a 70MPH zone... |

Try the 165/80R13s. They are just a little taller than the 155s and narrower than the 175s. They work great on the Rocket. And yes removing the weight works great. I am not sure how this translates to our small engines. But in the old days the Hot Rodder used to figure if you lost 10lbs, it was one free hp. So if you lost 100lbs, you just picked up 10 free hp. You are not getting free hp, you just had to use those ponies to excelerate that weight. When I yanked the air out of mine. It was 38 lbs. Not including the under the dast things. |

Got to run a good 7.5 or so gallons out of the car throughout the week and filled back up... 53.44 MPG, about +1 more MPG than the last tank (this is with Unicron7 riding in it). I've inplemented some P&G into part of the last tank (started with just letting it idle down the hills, then a couple days later started shutting it down completely). I expected better increases than this, but I did not do this on the entire tank. I'll do P&G (full shut down) on this tank and post back with results

I did P&G for a full tank and it's not really helping me out. I think I'll need to go back to DWL as the local terrain just isn't suited for P&G. |

DWL seems to work better for me rather than P&G. I do coast A LOT though. |

I'll coast when I can, I even coast into my work's parking lot on a dead motor as well as down Unicron7's driveway in the morning, but there's just too many hills around here to utilize P&G well. DWL seems to work better with hilly terrain. |

52.5 MPG again, so I've switched down to 89 octane and bumped my dizzy back some. I didn't have my timing light with me when I did it so I don't know where it's at right now, but it's not pinging. I'll dial it in with the light later on. |
