Hi Guys, As some of you know, I am starting a project car for the Bonneville Salt Flats. The plan was to go out and observe this last mid Sept. I wanted to see just what the techs are looking for. And how best to fit my project into their system. Wellllll we did not quite make it there. We broke down in Fernley NV. There is nothing in Fernley. Thank you for your support when I was broke down Hearts, Billy and BB and can't forget the Mullet Thanx guys and Gal! So I have started the project with out the info I was in need of. Anyhow the Dark Starr is a 99 chevy Metro, 1.0L 5spd, 3dr car. It is the nicest car I have ever owned and the newest. Not counting the dinged up fenders from the previous owner. You all would have laughed. I got all fired up last week. Went out and decided that I was gonna take the plunge and start. I got my tools laid out and got in the car. I don't know what happend, but I just could not start taking it apart. So I put the tools aside. Drank a thought about it some more. Started this whole process again. And then the doubt hit again."this is the nicest and newest car you own dummy. Don't take it apart." I did this like 4 times before I could actually take parts off this car. So now I have had many beer, and have started yanking the seats out. Just as I am climbing out dragging the rear seat with me. Someone drives up to my place. Its one of the old guys from town. An old Marine. With still has the flat top and everything. I instantly turned into a little kid. He asked me what you doing? "Nothin" I was feeling so low about gutting this car that when Ron asked. I was like a kid that just got caught doing something bad. . He just wanted to borrow one of my tools. So now I have the interior all over my garage. I have been taking lots of photos. I will post them when I can get a hand from one of my tech friends again. But heres what happening so for All the interior in the back is out. The new engine is torn down, I am currently porting the head. I had to take a break from that. Its makin my hands hurt. I have everything for the head except the valve springs and retainers. They are one the way from SRD. I even have one of 3Techs 222/365 cams. Mike was trying to help me out with a sprocket, but I was a bone head. {lived in Vegas to long, unable to tell when someone is trying to be nice to me} Sorry Mike. Once the head is done, get the tires and start the prelims on the suspension. IE lowering it and making it a lot stiffer. So tires are next. Then pistons and rods. I will keep up dating this thread. The plan now it to still run next year but to only run in the 130mph club. Basically its a street class. They time you but not officially. You can't challenge a record from this class. But I can work out the detail for the power train. Then come back and start getting ready to run in the Production/I class. Thats us. 1.0L The record is 124+ for a non turbo, non super chargerd car. They are gonna make me carry stuff like a parachute. So you can see to run the class will take time |

That may be the guy that I had posted about. I can't hear the sound. I am at work and there are to many machines running. Is he running a 1.0l snowmobile engine? There was a guy in 08 trying to run. He was having flywheel and clutch problems. They were not working to gether well. But that car looks fast. And he should be in an Alterd class. Notice the top is chopped. I am gonna run in a Production class. Hey Shultz he has your name on the side of his car. Are you getting any royalties? LOL |

Hey BB is there any more info on that car? I am having a tough time hearing them talk. There is a lot of equipment running at the plant. How fast did he go? He has to be in one of the modified classes. It looks fast |

Wow I have been looking at the Hudson Bros cars. The are very cool. And its a little discouraging. Then I need to remind myself. They are running in a different class. I did finally get the dash out of the Starr. What a pain. Who ever put this thing together did a good job. And they must have really small hands too. It took for ever to get it out. Now I must remove the heater core and all that stuff. Maybe tomorrow night. It wrecked my back getting the dash out. I want to take the time to thank those of you who are very supportive of my project. Thank you very much. So times its a little overwelming. I look at all the money still needed to just get started. Its going to happen.I mailed my cam and sprocket off to 3Tech yesterday. That and the dash were my big improvements on the project for the day. Tonight I am gonna focas on more porting for the head. My old compressor took a big . So I now have a new 60 gal one from HF. We just got that store last year here. We are behind most of the country for box stores. The cam I sent in is going into the Rocket. I want to put one of the XFi grinds in it. I already have the 222/365 grind from 3Tech. The hold up will be Customs, I guess. That is what the local postmaster said. Its as bad as Christmas waiting to the parts to get here. No valve springs from SRD yet. He forgot to mail them 2 weeks ago. But thats all the progress today. With the heater box and controls for it still in the car. I have removed 220lbs. And there is a lot yet to remove. Just don't lean on the car. Its going to get very thin, before I start adding weight back to it. In the mean time I can dream about it.

I have spent most of my week off working on the Starr. I took a mini trip and checked out some junk yards about 140miles from my home. Nothing. But is was a great drive. Yesterday I went up to my brothers place. I stopped in the local bone yard there. I found just about all the sheet metal and Guppy front bumper I have been looking for. This car is even gonna give up some wheel, flywheel for a G13, hood, bucket style headlights. I am very jazzed about the project today. When I leave here today, I am gonna finish the polishing on the port job. The inside of the exhaust port was very restricted. You could suck a cat through it now. This thing is really gonna breath. I still must buy piston, rods and some other goodies. But its starting to come together as a project. I took a few shots of the intr before and after the removal. Once it was all out, all I could think of was What have I done? Its the nicest and newest car I have ever owned. But its out and done. As it sits now the headlights are out, the int, out, airbags systm out too. The front bumper is off and stripped down to nothing. I got my valve springs and titanium valve seats and keeper too. So I must now finish the head. At least then I can get it milled then I can reassemble it. I will be excited to get one of the first pieces done. I am tired of tearing this thing apart. Ineed to start putting parts back on it. Its down to about about 1450 lbs now. It will get lighter before I am done. Then I must start putting weight back in. |

It was a great day junkyarding. That is until it started to rain. But I have webs between my toes, so no biggy. LOL I did get the front guppy mouthed bummper. Someone had removed it and welded on the worst tow mount I have ever seen. They spent a lot of time messing this one up. I got the; bumper Front inner fender liners R front fender, I would have gotton the left one too but the forklift driver punched it with a fork. Both axels Standard flywheel for the G13 Both head light buckets. I think they are lighter than the one piece. I have yet to prove this though. Gotta get it next to my bathroom scale. Not very scientific but it works. You should have seen all this stuff in my 94. It was crowded. Some how I am starting to get the feeling that this project has taken on a life of its own. I am just the caretaker LOL. As it is, its eating me out of house and home. I did the lazy thing. I got burned out and did not finish the head. I did hear from 3Tech and he got the parts I sent. So I should get some stuff back from him too. It has been a good week for progress. I have taken alot of pics. But in resistance about posting them. Not sure why. |
