Chad's Build Thread; Just like energizer bunny...it just keeps going and going and going!!!!

So the other day I'm hangin out with my friend (we are stripping down one of his 3 metros, its unsaveable and going to the wreckers) well anyway we go for a ride to walmart with another buddy of his in his teal 1993 2 door...thats a pretty damn good payload, his buddy is big and im very big, and i was astounded at how it performed, it was like a normal car, he was only using like 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, short shifting it by my standards, and it had absolutely no problem driving the three of us, we even up some slight grades.....I'm like WTF???? my car bogs down with one small other passanger, i have to hold nearly WOT to keep up with traffic...and i know for a fact nothing else is wrong now (timing is correct, both ignition and cam/crank) no codes anymore, TPS adjusted correctly, it starts right up with NO problems or assistance from me with the gas pedal, and ive been maintaining it with regular oil changes and seafoam maintenance.... It just lacks overall power now even with 3 tech's performance cam. So I'm thinking shes just plain tired! I have noticed alot of blowby coming out of my draft tube (no PCV here anymore) and she blows blue smoke only on higher revs, so I'm betting its rings and valves or something, she just turned 170k on her original engine, so its rebuild time!

To start I already purchased Kyle's performace head, so the top end is pretty much takin care of, its the other stuff and the bottom end that im preparing to purchase parts for. I was originally going to have mullet help me with this for another "weekend rebuild" but a friend has agreed to help me!!!!

My Wishlist: :)

$20 Rod Bearings (ITM) partsdinosaur
$60 Full Gasket Set (APEX) partsdinosaur
$90 Piston & Ring Package (ITM) partsdinosaur
$30 Headbolts (3tech) 3tech

TOTAL= $200 or so

Now I could use some input here, I'm questioning the quaility of the apex full gasket set (mainly the head gasket, also im not fimilar with the brand), its a good price at $60, the full felpro set is around $150, i am going for budget friendly but i want it to last too....and im known for my lead foot!!!

also im wondering, do the wrist pins ever fail on this motor? i have a very light "double knock" but its not always there, and it seems to go away with engine speed (its mainly noticeable under light loads and revving at idle) but like i said it actually goes away some days, where i cant hear it at all regardless of the engine speed or load, but then the next day its there. heres a youtube video of someone else with a wrist pin knock...my engine knock (when its actually doing it) sounds absolutely 100% like this person's engine noise...also i had a friend listen to it and he said it could be a collasped lifter?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVgqHai2qJE

lets say for the sake of argument that it is a wrist pin (if its a collasped lifter it wont matter anyway the heads getting changed), what should i buy to correct this, im already getting new pistons, i cant seem to find connecting rods OR wrist pins anywhere, new pistons wont fix it correct?

:x congrats if you actually made it to here and read through all this!!!! I appreciate ANY AND ALL advice you can give me!!! :thumb :cheers

EDIT: Im going to try the same diagnosis that this guy did tommarow, and see if i get similar results, i will post back then.

:news Whew, made it. :coffee ;)
Have you considered the Catalytic converter? Just a thought but unbolting the tube from the manifold to the cat and a short drive would tell you if it's another candidate.
Just for giggles you might do a dry/wet compression check, if nothing else as a baseline to see how much of an improvement you get after the rebuild. Piston slap could be some of the noise you are hearing. Granted then you'd have no compression with a piston that loose.

'Piston Slap' sometimes sounds more like a knock or the sound of a diesel engine running, it is also typically worse when the engine is cold and lessens as the engine reaches operating temperature. The noise of 'Piston Slap' often is louder when listening for it below the oil pan. - Wikipedia. Check around with a stethoscope? :-/

ill try anything with it at this point, the cat is around a year old now, and no i havent listened to the eninge yet, but on my next day off ill try unbolting it, comp test, and stethescope. the last time i did a comp test was about a lttle less than a year ago, then i had around 180-190 in all 3 surprizingly.....im not sure about piston slap, like one of the commenters said on the vid, wrist pin knock has that very distinctive double knock sound and i got that (SOMETIMES LOL)

actually ill tell you what, im going to take a vid of my car idling and rev it to see if anyone on here can "guess that engine noise" lol we'll make it a little game!

well my pricing was wrong, a complete felpro gasket set is $110.58 including shipping from rockauto.com so its almost double the apex set, but for peace of mind ill prob go felpro

also i just found out that i am allowed use our press at school to press the wrist pins into the new pistons....so im thrilled about that!

I have a set of pistons that have never been used. I bought them to rebuild my original block, back in the day (which was a Wednesday), and i would up ruining the crank, so i just took the pistons back out and off of the con-rods. I'm sure that they will need new rings as the old rings have a little bit of surface rust from just sitting around.

Just pay the shipping and they're yours. $10

thanks kyle, thats cool!!!!! thanks man paypal sent!

EDIT**** do they come with the wrist pins??? (the ones i was going to buy from partsdinosaur said they do) and i was going to change them due to possible loose wrist pins on my motor, if not thats cool anyway ill find the pins somewhere :)

sweet!!!!, the same friend that im helping strip down the metro is giving me a complete G10 motor for $20, his dad said that it has low comp due to a burnt valve in the #3 cylinder, he said the other 2 cylinders had good comp though. this is great because now i can take my time and build that engine's bottom end up, and slap the new head on it and still drive around for the winter with my current engine, whereas before i would have had to have a car down while i rebuilt the current motor!

Good to hear. I need to do the same. I finally got my race car again, but it burns a qt of oil every q40 miles and the rods rattle in first gear no matter how easy you take it. At that it easily keeps upw ith traffic with the 3tech cam 10 degree wheel and having the springs cut half a coil to lower it.

Yeah, cold it blows blue smoke out the back under a load. I got a new oil pump, and a rebuilt head, so looking at gaskets, rod and crank bearings, rings and maybe pistons too.

yea then once you do the swap you can rebuild that engine and sell it with the 3 tech cam in it. and make a little back :deal

Before I found this site, I was able to find pistons at the local Napa, and Kragens. But I had to buy the rings seperate. Not sure why. And the pistons were/are cast, not forged. But they seem to be working great and the Rocket is not a racer.
What kind of racer did you get back???? :popcorn :banana :drivin
