I just got a 94 Metro XFI. one of the things it failed inspection for was RIMS and Lugnuts. The lugs were pulling THROUGH the holes in the rims. I got new Lugs finally and I also got a new set of rims. I needed to stay with 12x4 rims since I have a brand spanking new set of tires on the car. SO I hunted down and found some original 12x4 rims. The rims were VERY good but rusty from being outside for many years. I ground all the rust off with a brass wire brush in a cordless drill. I then went through a few sessions of Greased Lightning and rinsing and then also took it to the local wash for some brushing and power washing. Came out very nice should have took some BEFORE pictures. GRR I need to document everything I do with this car from now on. Once dry I applied grey rustoleum primer. I did the entire rim all surfaces. Figured this will help prevent rust and it will make it easier for me to be alerted to problems such as leaks etc.. Then I applied what I thought was BLACK paint with metal flakes in it. Turned out its a dark GREY which I am not thrilled by (I don't like grey) I want the metal flake to stand out (I don't like black either but it helps metal sparkles to stand out) its really not bad but I am going to use the rims on the car now as an experiment since I am getting rid of them. I will see if I can find some metal flake black and try that and also try a nice bright blue metal flake I saw and pick 2 other colors that I think are nice. paint each wheel with a little of each and see if any of them are better than this grey I did the rims in. I then clear coated them. I hope it will be a nice durable finish. Here is a sneak peek of the new rims More to come as I work on the rims Saturday. |

I found the nice blue metal flake I wanted to try but its duplicolor! damn. means I have to wait at least 7 days before applying it since applying different brands of paint before 100% hardened can have disastrous results (experience here :-) Same with the BLACK metal flake I wanted. its duplicolor as well. So I will stick with the grey for now. I need to get the bad rims off the car pronto. |
