0w30 or Amazing?Recently was into the Wal-Mart and saw a five quart jug of 0w30. I remember reading a really huge article about different oils and viscosities. I dont really remember all the details of the article, but came to the conclusion that i would try some in my metro (if i could find some that is). What do you all think? |

30 weight is what is recommended in the car per the manual. Is there something I'm missing here? |

I remember people on ecomodder discussing the use of 0w30 in these cars; here's some posts. Any particular reason you want to use a 0 weight oil? Indiana isn't known for it's -40° mornings. |

Depends on who makes the 0W30. Provided the rating was ACEA A3-B3 or B4 (courtesy - mwebb, "API SM and ILSAC GF4 should be considered as minimum values") 0W30 will start out as water and thicken as it reaches operation temp. '0' would be about '0' protection but excellent for -40° mornings as wikityler points out. 5W30 would offer more starting protection and an easy start - less viscous oil. IMO, a 5W30 synthetic user. I'd do 0w30 if I could find it. That way the oil is "thinner" in cold temps, then thickens a little once it gets up to temperature. That is, if I understand the 0w30 correctly. I think I read that article too. |

Hi, I am not an oil expert. However if I understand right, oil has a viscosity improver added to thin oil, which thickens it as it gets warmer. So, 0w30 oil is actually "0 thick" oil that has stuff it in to make it like 30w oil when it is warm. So what? Well, the viscosity improver degrades as you put the miles on the oil. Does it matter? I guess it depends. I am a motorcycle guy, and motorcycles use engine oil in the engine, clutch, and transmission. Motorcycles are tough on oil. After many miles, the 0w30 may actually become equivalent to a 0w25 or 0w20. I would be afraid to use 0w oils in a motorcycle. I personally am learly of using oils that have a large gap between the first and second numbers (0w30). I am more comfortable using an oil that has a narrower gap (ie- 5w30 or 10w30). 10w30 oil is 10w oil with the viscosity improver added. Will this oil hurt the Geo? I am guessing not. The Geo is a low hp motor, so I am guessing it is very easy on it's oil. However I probably wouldn't use 0w30 in my Geo, because I wouldn't have peace of mind. (Peace of mind counts for something!) The Geo motor is engineered to run 5w30, and the oil pump should pick up the 5w on a cold morning. However, if I had -40f winters, I would probably use the 0w30. My non-expert 2 cents worth |

FYI, I use 0W30 in my Turbo Supra. You want the oil to be as thin as possible on start up so it can flow through your bearings and fill the gaps fast so the least amount of wear possible occurs. So you think a 5 weight or 10 weight (cold) oil will do this better? The oil I use in the supra is Castrol Syntech 0W30 European Formula. It's actually closer to a 40 weight at operating temps than the 30 weight it's advertised at. |

I've been using it for about a year now, don't really notice any difference at all except the timing chain in my Aerio is more likely to rattle on startup. I'm using Mobil One though, don't know if it would be the same in a conventional oil. There is some concern about wider gaps between the first and second number in dino oil. |

Is there even a Group III oil out there that is 0W30? I've not seen one. They must use a lot of modifiers to get it to be a thinner oil at start up. The only 0W30's I've seen on the shelf were either Group IV POA's or Group V Ester based oils... |

The "0" rating is just how long it takes to drip down a surface, I take it. So I understood it to mean better flow, better lubrication. I was thinking it might improve gas mileage, Im pretty sure this stuff was designed for hybrids as a trick for their MPG ratings. I might pickup a jug and try it out. ----->I would be more weary of a "w20" rating. |

I saw a mobil 1 0w40 at autozone the other day! Im like jeez how do they make that big of a gap??? Anyway I've tried 0w30 and 0w20, not much of a change in engine noise with the exception of my lifters going mad on cold mornings startups!!!!

as per the bob is the oil guy forums testing by blackstone labs shows that the Mobil One 0w40 tests as 5w30 after 5k miles in a 2001 Audi A4 with 1.8 turbo engine so as the 0w40 uses base stock 4 and the others do not and the mobil one 0w40 is rated as ACEA A3 B3 , B4 the others are not of the three i would use Mobil one 0w40 |

I ran 10w20 in my turbo motor but I mixed it with lucas oil stabilizer, which I hope my mix was close to that of a 30weight oil. 10w30 is like summer tires, 0w30 is like winter tires and 5w30 is the inbetween "no" season tire... I did have reasons why I ran 20weight but I forgot already.... lol. I use 30weight in everything really. lawnmower, snowblower etc |
