..."Anyone have an idea how long the fuel pump stays on while running the vehicle at 55mph?"...

i do i do ....
100% of the time

if the engine is running , so is the fuel pump ... if the system is working as designed
but
return-less systems are installed in most newer cars , the regulator and return line is / are located in the fuel tank.

so you could retrofit such a system into your car
time to crack the books

Might want to change your handle to Dept911. I would leave it alone. Gas is nothing to play with. We seem to take it granted because we use so much of it. :banana :banana :banana

911 is right..... time to move on,,,,, narrower tires, over pressure them,,, make arrow mods, gear ratio, xfi stuff,,,,, dude leave the gas safe where its at....... many other ways to improve...... don't want to loose a member,,,, or have metros now in line with pinto's............. lol i have four pinto's= and race two of them in scca asphalt track,,, they stay away to,,, i,m running stock fuel tanks,, hence the nick name Krazy Kyle

Thanks for caring. I dont think I'll chase it any further either. Like frame fixer said to much time will be invested in small gains and maybe big problems later. I tried something simple ,quick and "SAFE". If it were to show any improvement I would have taken it further. It didn't so I'm done. I'll go for aero mods and suspension next. Shall we say closed. :shit

well I can think of one way to test it safetly. A gallon of gasoline handled properly is not that dangerous. rig up a fuel cell and heat up the fuel. (what kind of temps are needed anyway??)

before any of that IS there anything to be gains by heating the fuel? is there any data that shows a worthwhile gain from heated fuel?

You need to heat it up enough so it starts to vaporise, -40f. Diesel is like 140f, this is why diesels has fuel preheaters, but gas cars do not.

You should research Smokey's Adiabatic Engine. They try a 3hp briggs n straton with a few ozs of gas.

Well, dept411 looks like we can still discuss it, eh. :bump

So try looking at http://mechdb.com/index.php/60mpg_Geo_Metro_XFI. :news

About 2/3 the way down is 2 pics of how the gas heater was done. Cylinder inserted in the coolant line. Copper fuel line wrapped around it and lines attached. Wrap the whole thing with insulating tape.

Please don't wrap your fuel line around your exhaust, that's not a good idea. You might try wrapping some insulation around the radiator hose, fuel line combo to keep the heat in there.

Yeah these guys are right, Please don't get this near your exhaust system.

Hmm maybe wrap a completely independant coil system around the exhaust with oil or water in it and then use that AWAY from the exhaust as the heat source for the fuel coil? this way the fuel lines never come into contact with the Exhaust pipes but you get to use the heat from it?

at one time (on my Vw) I was thinking or doing something like this for seat heating. ie run tubes all along the exhaust pipes all insulated and "route" them inside the car to under the seat cushions kind of like floor heating in homes?

alas the exhaust in the vw is ALL in the back which would make it annoying to do and run. might be doable on the metro. Fuel heat AND seat heater :-)

Can you do me a favor and change that link to mechdb.com instead of neodi.net? It was an accident with domains on my server and I've since fixed it ;).

Btw, if anyone's interested it's an open wiki so you can edit and submit anything you want related to cars there.

Done. :thumb
And welcome to the forum, mechdb! :coffee

But I have to ask if that's your car? It was written by Trevor Heath? And that would be....? If you don't mind my asking, I've followed the progress for about a year, at least. Inspiring. :news :thumb

Welcome Mechdb. I loved the article on the no tool oil change. Also great article on being a independent Mechanic. Thanks and hope you enjoy the site. :banana :banana :banana

Yeah it's Trevor's. He gave me permission to edit it a bit and replicate it. I've done a few gas mileage things myself as well in the past and was very fascinated with it at one point but right now I'm striving for some performance gains instead. Perhaps I'll reach a nice balance in the middle somewhere. You can view my builds on there if you go to the Ford Escort section and look at Alex's builds. My strategy was pretty much less weight, short ram intakes (hate cold air ones for complexity and mpg), and I really want to try hydrogen injection.

Overall it's a wiki I'm trying to get started to help everyone share information rather than having it scattered throughout the net. If any of you guys ever wish to post your builds/modifications on there or edit any of the other articles, go right ahead :).
