So if all the trannys are exactly the same gearing wise except for the final gear, and your trying for top mileage, why wouldn't the first order of business be to swap out the final gear for a 3.52:1 ratio? Or am I missing something incredibly stupid and simple, aside from the change in performance?
No, that's pretty much it. The 3.79 from the XFI is a mileage improver, and the 3.52 from the four cylinder swift (rare) is even better, but the further you go, the less fun the car will be to drive in town. I wouldn't go any further than 3.79 without doing something to the engine to improve low end torque.

The next problem is installation. The final drive gear consists of two gears, one of which is machined into the countershaft. In other words, changing this gear set involves a TOTAL disassembly of the transmission, big job. You're better off finding a working transmission and swapping it.
I agree about the engine. I'm doing the cam swap first to move the torque lower in the rpm range. In addition, I'm putting a rebuilt cylinder head in at the same time.

Also, I would like to add. If you are changing speed gears (IE) first through fifth. If you change out say one of the gears in 4th. Change out both gears. They are a set. What happens to one, happens to the other, except backwards. If the one gear is worn, and you put a good gear against it. It will wear to the bad one. And most likely make noise. Sorry I have not been around more on this thread. If you have standard trans Q's, PM me. I can only be here on and off now. So it may take me a few days to get back to you. But I will get back.

I have a 1996 metro lsi sedan 4 cylinder. From what I understand on this thread I must have the 3.52 final drive tranny and there is no way to lower the rpm's from what I now have other than getting bigger rims and tires correct?

You don't have to get bigger rims, just taller tires. And narrow is better. Less friction on the road. If you pull the speedo cable where it goes into the trans. You should be able to count the teeth on the ring gear. I think the 3.52s, use 74 teeth. I don't have my cheat sheet here.
