It sounds to me like you have it right. Don't worry about damaging anything. It's not an interference motor, so that's not an issue at all.
Nonetheless, if in doubt, go back to the stock setting, and go from there.
If you set it to stock, and you still have a problem, it's not related to the sprocket setting. Occasionally, on a ground cam the lifters need a few minutes to pump back up (hydraulically take the lash out that was created when a cam with smaller base circle is installed).

Thanks for the input Mike. Now that I know nothing can be damaged since it is not an interference motor I will go back to the stock setting and fire it up. I hope that the lifters do just need some time to pump back up and the problem isn't in my assembly... the engine running abnormally just makes me nervous.

Mike is correct. The lifters may need to adjust to the different lobe heights.

When i installed my cam the idle was loping like crazy like it was missing a cylinder. Not a normal lope a bad sound. This was during a test start with the accessory belts off and pulleys off. I put everything back together and fired it back up and it idled bad for a second then cleared up and went up to its normal cold engine high idle. I dont know if you can relate to this because my engine sounded good and i didnt have any lifter noise. Only bad exhaust lope. And, you installed the whole new head when i left my head, but let us know what happens when you put it back to the stock setting

Thanks for all the help guys. I just got done lining the timing marks back to stock set and running the engine for a good 10mins or so. It still sounded pretty bad. Almost like a small diesel.

I got a video of the engine this time so you guys could hear it. Its uploading to ImageShack right now and when its done I'll post it up.

To me that sounds plenty fine BESIDES the lifter noise. I busted a timing belt and from when i parked the car to when i fixed it was a few weeks. When i started it up it had lifter noise just like that for the first 15-20 min that i was driving it, then it slowly went away by 25 min. Never heard a lifter noise again to this day

Thanks for the input Obaja. I hope that this does just end up being a lifter noise. I'm going to try and buy a timing light tomorrow just so I can figure out where I'm sitting.

Here's a Youtube link of the vid for anyone that can't see the vid through the other links:

I have to ask what grade of oil are you using and is it full? :hmm
Sounds a little like the exhaust leak I had on the '96 where the donut gasket on the exhaust manifold was not sealed because of a stripped bolt. You may have one. :dunno

EDIT:
the '96 idle on Photobucket. http://s404.photobucket.com/albums/pp123/BadBent/Repair%20Pics/?action=view&current=96idle.flv

I just realized that you installed a complete head, not just a cam, and sprocket.
Assuming that you have oil delivery to the head, it definitely is lifter noise.
Lift the valve cover, and verify that you have oil delivery, then you need to drive it, and get them to pump up.
It's perfectly normal.

It looks like I do have oil delivery. Ill go ahead and drive it to work today and let you guys know if it gets any better. Its about a 30min drive each way so Id think that would be enough to clear this issue up.

Bad Bent I listened to your engine in that clip and it does sound similar to mine. I don't know if I have an exhaust leak or not Ill check on that. I don't think I would though having a new exhaust manifold gasket on there. I made sure to torque the bolts down to spec on the manifold to prevent stripping also.

Right before I was about to leave with the car running I removed the engine oil cap on the valve cover just to be as sure as I could it was getting oil and it looked dry. Didn't see any fresh oil being pumped up inside the head cover. No oil splashing around or anything.
