..."It may be the EGR, but I always forget if the EGR works at WOT or idle.".....

..........................
the EGR should function only at cruise at operating temperature

Never at idle OR WOT
.........................................................
if there is no oil getting pumped up to the cylinder head
do not run the engine again until

AFTER

you locate and repair that particular problem .

.....................................
on my 1996 G10 with 3Tech economy cam and +10 cam wheel , there is no benefit to advancing BASE ignition timing past 8 degrees BTDC
my engine did not ping at all with BASE timing advanced to 25 degrees BTDC

measured . documented

but during the testing the cat converter was partially clogged
which
MAY
have affected the Ignition timing map because of
incorrect
High MAP (load) values associated with the clogged cat

now we are on winter gas blends
testing is useless

is it possible the headgasket could have been installed upside down?

I wont run it again untill I figure out what is going on. I made sure to install the head gasket with "top" facing up to view so I dont think that is the problem. If its not anything else than I'll pull the head off but I really want to avoid that at all costs

Some say...

Is it dry as in no oil at all, or just insufficient oil? You could remove one of the oil channel plugs on the side of the head to see if oil is getting that far.

I think many here have more specific experience on the internal of this engine than me. I have rebuilt alot of engines, but only swaps on these. Anyway, Keep It Stupid Simple. The pinging sounds like retarded like another poster suggested. it could be electrical, or mechanical timing. My best guess is dist timing is off cause of aftermarket cam gear.

just my 2 cents. Good luck

Shiznit, I didnt even read page 2, and I forgot another thought of what size cam you puit in I neve modified small engines like this but larger one (V-8's) the cam profile can be quirky. Some cams so large they NEVER idle properly, doubt thats your prob, just somethin to keep in mind.

Anyway, didnt mena to muck up you thread. :)

Hey guys I removed the valve cover again to overlook everything. It looked like there was clean oil sitting up top pooled in the head. I left the valve cover off and ran the engine for a moment to watch for "whirling" or "flinging" of the oil, and after a few seconds it looked like the oil was moving up top as should be.

I put the valve cover back on, ran the engine, and tuned the distributors timing to about 17deg.

After tuning the timing I took the car out and it was wanting to overheat (based on what the thermostat was reading on the cluster). I thought there must have been a big air pocket in the engines cooling system from taking the block apart. I unscrewed the radiators cap just a little bit while the engine was still hot and it was purging air. I let the engine cool for a few mins, started it back up and headed home (luckily I was only a mile down the road).

After I got the car back home I let it cool down for a few mins and drained the rad, flushed it with water, and added new coolant. I started the engine and just let it run, while I made sure to keep the radiator topped off. It took a good half hour or so to get all of the air out of the system. After I got all of the air out of the system the engine ran cool like should be.

After driving the car for a while I noticed the lifters quieted down just like suprf1y said they would. I drove it everyday to and from work this past week without problem. The engine has been running very smooth.

Yesterday the engine all of a sudden started wanting to die at idle though. It will run smooth anything over 1300-1400rpm, but anything under and it doesn't sound good. It sounds like a bad misfire or like I'm "running a performance cam". I connected my timing light up and viewed my timing based off of the 1st cylinder wire at idle. I can only see the mark here and there with the engine running, but if I connect the timing light pickup clip to the 2nd or 3rd wire I can see the white timing mark on the pulley what seems to be every fire.

Checked the spark and it was only sparking here and there. I put a new cap and new wires on the distributor and now it seems to be running great.

Ill put a video of the engine running up here tomorrow so you guys can see the progress

Got 70 MPG?

Glad to see your issues are getting ironed out. Unicron7's new motor had the same loud lifter issues that yours had. It was just dry lifters from a fresh motor. Once I get my eco head fron mike in the mail I'll dissasemble mine and soak down the lifters so they are nice and pumped up.

That sounds like a good idea starscream,

I never did get that video of the engine running today because my battery seems to be dead all of a sudden this evening. How is leaving me baffled. Ill get this issue worked out and get some footage.
