I have been wanting a Metro for some time now and finally have to the chance to go on a buying search. I found a few from Tow yards that are leins for about $850. I Found 2 whisch are 5-speed manual and with AC. How much does the AC affect the mpg and or is it better to just find one without AC? I live in Los Angeles and the weather is always pretty mild but there can be some summer days when an AC is great to have.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

geos with ac , are heavier without it.

and i might be wrong but i think xfi's only came without ac???

people do take ac out of there geo's purely for mpg+(only for city mpg)

if you can deal with no ac and want max mpg possible. find a xfi.

if you want ac get one with ac

Thank you. I am looking for a hatch back. I was under the impression that only the automatics came with AC but i've seen them posted as manual 5-speed with AC. I might as well get what i can get and i can always remove it later.

Get the one with A/C, you can always remove it.

EDIT: I just saw that you said the same thing I did. :)

A/C weighs 45 pounds or so, so it's not a disaster carrying it around, only when you turn it on. :-) The important bit is the manual transmission, automatics get much less mileage.

hey hlywd,

been in so cal for 30 years ....out near the coast now though. got my degree at claremont in the summer heat and smog so thick you couldn't see 200 yds. i use the ac only a few times a year ...in the city on really hot days of course ..... but it's great to have it particularly in the rain or snow when the small cabin tends to fog up badly.

i watch my mid / high 40s mileage typically drop to the low 40s if i use it much. removing the belt is better than removing the system. weight is not the general cause of mileage decrease ..... i got my old engine best ... 56mpg ..... with a full camping load.

So, let's go out beyond the 3-mile limit, outside the box, eh. What about a sun roof? OK, yea, I went a little extreme with the WRC roof scoop but it works. :D Still the sun roof, opening to the rear would draw air to your ankles as my roof scoop does. I have the option of opening the 'aluminum vent' forward and the air cools my dog in the back seat. It really cools her off if we spray her with a mist of water. B-)

At www.trucknvans.com/SFC-CRL-Sunroofs they have the 17"x17" sun roofs, $188/pair, you might call for pricing a replacement. Maybe you could get just one. I thought of the 17x32" roofs but then I measured how wide my '91s roof actually was and mused over what it's structural integrity (ie flex) might be. :'(

I had AC. I live at the coast, Way up N of you guys. I pulled mine off. It was about 35lbs. I have not gone under the dash to remove the rest. I hate working under dashboards. But it made a difference. And if you put together several of these mods. It adds up to economy
