High Idle; diagnosing high idle

My 93'vert had a problem awhile back,
it wouldn't pass CA smog test, (couldnt get the idle speed down,
and it was running way too rich...).
I did a lot of reading... through the manuals,
chiltons, haynes, geo shop manuals. and on the web, looking
for answers, suggestions, etc...
That's where/when i discovered a few different metro/geo related forums,
including this site! (geometroforum.com) by far the best site for any/all metro owners
My clutch went out at the same time, so, ultimately i ended up
rebuilding my engine, along with clutch/flywheel change, and etc....

The cause of my High Idle situation, turned out to be a plugged coolant hose
see the pics below... the hose labeled #3 was plugged up with
radiator "stop leak" products, sediment, and etc..., as were the water passage
in the intake manifold leading to the #3 hose, and the water passage
in the TBI, from the #3 hose, to the (thermostatically controlled)
IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE & COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR...
No coolant flowing, causes the valve to remain closed...(auto-choke) in
cold engine mode... Both the valve and the temp sensor never "warm up"
so the ECM never gets out of the "COLD ENGINE" mode,
(forcing a "rich fuel mixture"/"auto-choke") operation.
RESULTS= POOR FUEL EFFICIENCY and HIGH IDLE.

Since the rebuild, My engine, etc has been running better than ever, primarily
due to the excellent info, suggestions, and etc... found on this forum/website!.
Hopefully the responses i have been able to post can/will be of some help to
others as well!
(with corrections or whatever pointed out if or as necessary...of course!)
Enjoy, and Good Luck!

Nice pictures pancakeron! :thumb :thumb
Excellent diagnosis. I don't see much corrosion build up in my hoses but we never know what abuse the previous owner did, eh. :shake

Woodie I would have said the same but it's a'91 and I have one of those that does not have an ICM. Good suggestion though if there is one.... :thumb

Nice pics Ron. Always start with the most likely candidate. Vacuum Webb may have hit it right on the head the first time. If not then start at the top of those fine lists and start to eliminate them.
