Ok as in another thread I want to try replacing my dash with a Custom Built dash. SO how to wire everything up if possible WITHOUT the original cluster becomes important. I also want to GEO my Voyager and if that is possible at all this info will also be important. SO first step is to figure out what all the wires in those 3 plugs that go into the cluster DO. it wa surprisingly easy to figure most of it out. I figured to share that info here. I took a picture of it high contrast and in photoshop I colored all the traces marked them etc.. Here is a picture ![]() and a link to the 1.6mb monster pic if you want more detail and to print it out. http://www.mylittlemouse.com/other/Cluster_Diagram.jpg It would seem most of the stuff I need really is just "dumb" lights ie the dash does NO processing of them including the shift and ses lights. IE I can tap directly into the wires in the plugs and run those to my own LED lights. Battery might be an exception but that should be very easy to "rig" my own discharge circuit that illuminates the light. many of the "unknowns" are likely FUEL sender and TEMP sender wires and TACH signal wires. in fact I should have done this with the TACH cluster but I don't feel like ripping it out of the car at the moment. When I do I will also know what pins do the airbags. When I redo my dash I am thinking about adding a passenger airbag if it can be done safely. Last thing I want is an errant airbag tearing someones head off if I install it wrong :-) All the ones in BLUE (dark blue) appear to be either nothing or features not in my xfi. it would be easy to tell if I took it apart further but I need this cluster so I can not do that. if anyone has any broken cluster they are going to toss and want to send them to me (I would pay shipping) I will tear them apart further. OR if I find some at a pic and pull cheap. ahh it just hit me the contacts near the SCREWS are likely for those gauges!! so LEFT Plug wire 6 is likely signal for the Water Temp Gauge and White next to it is ground. RIGHT Plug wires 8, 9, 10 likely have something to do with the FUEL gauge. SOME of the traces do NOT appear to go "directly" to a plug wire. the Purple and Green traces where the speedometer plugs in for example??? The green one runs all the way up around over to the Right Signal but does not connect to it. Just terminates their (at least on the backside) any help in identifying what all the contacts are would be greatly appreciated! this is for a 94 Xfi not sure how many years would be the same but quite a few I bet. OK the flexi circuit appears to be ONE SIDED for the most part (I can't peel it all up). 100% of the dark BLUE plug traces really are nothing. They go nowhere. So they are either Nothing or Not used on the Xfi. I am updating the schemes with more info. so far I don't see ANY data paths OUT of the cluster they all appear to be dumb paths IE simply inputs to the bulbs in the cluster. Now fuel DOES appear to have 3 Traces going to it. the commong ground runs to it another ground (it has a - next to it) and the Signal Connection. could it be using one of the ground for data output? (someone suggested the ECU reads data FROM the fuel level system. is that direct or via the cluster?? The big green trace and the pink traces in the middle would seem to be Speedometer but they do not appear to goto the plugs?? ie all but a few plug wires are accounted for. The only unknowns I can see are 12 and 13 on the LEFT Plug 12 goes near the speedo ?? related? maybe thats the TACH signal but mine is unused in this cluster? 13 also goes near the cluster to "nothing" so maybe IT is Tach Signal? otherwise all plus appear accounted for. It does not appear as if removing the cluster will do anything at all to the opeartion of the car of function of the ECU at least that I can tell. anyone ?? |

I can only offer that perhaps it's a multi-layer PC Board. I have not looked, you might be able to tell if you hold it up to a bright light. If it is then the ground and power layers would be inside and holes that were wave soldered would connect the multiple layers. |

Nope its single layer for sure. nothing on the underside as far in as I can see without damaging it (appears paper backed white with a paper consistancy but likely just plastic) I am going to see what the pic and pull wants for the cluster. if its less than $15 I am just going to buy it and tear it apart :-) |

The 2 wires beside the speedometer cable go to the reed switch to feed the ecu a vss signal and make the shift light work. Nothing else on the dash really matters if it is hooked up to make the engine run. For almost everything in the dash a 1k resistor could be substituted for whatever circuit is needed. If you stick with the pre 95 cars then you can just toss the dash and not worry about the ecu. It really has nothing to do with the engine other than crap like fast idle for A/C and the shift light. The wiring diagrams on my site might help you decode what some of the wiring does. I don't know if you have looked at them yet or not. |

I will absolutely check it out! which wires next to the speedo feed back to the ecu? (want to update it) |
