First off, I would like to start by saying...... Great Forum!!! A forum dedicated to the Geo Metro, How cool is that? I have a 1990 Geo metro and have recently developed some sort of electrical problem. I have searched the internet for days now and still don't have a clue of whats wrong or how to fix it . My car keeps blowing a 20 amp fuse that is labeled IG in the fusebox. The first time it blew out I drove it for months with out problems. It then started blowing out about once or twice a week and now it blows out when you turn the key on.I found a couple of sites on the internet that indicated the O2 sensor was shorting out and killing the ignition. The 2 wires close to the sensor would rub together and short out.... Cool, so I checked it out. Problem is, my O2 sensor only has one wire on it. Is there another O2 sensor that I am missing? I haven't found anything on the internet that would indicate a common problem such as this with the 1990 metro, perhap someone here has had this same issue?? Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated..... I really miss the 47 mpg with the gas prices the way they are today |

I would check for a short in the ignition, the coil, or inspect the wiring where is passed through the firewall first. |

I can inspect the coil and where the wiring passes through the firewall but could you tell me how to chech for a short in the ignition? Not sure how this is done, Ive never done that before. |

Welcome to the forum, Skeeterusa! Your '90 has only the one O2 sensor as does my '91. Johnny is correct. I look for loose or frayed wires. Maybe a loose bolt. Perhaps some corrosion. You may want to get a Digital Volt/Ohm Meter and check your coil for the proper voltages... which I don't know. mwebb can help you track those down. P.S. I live down in McCall. |

get a 12volt test light or better still a DVOM . don't have a DVOM ? go buy one . 12 volt test light to batterY positive , touch another end to the suspect wires at or near the ignition coil when the light lights , that wire is grounded and .... connect positive test lead to battery positive and negative test lead to suspect wires around the ignition coil when the meter shows 12 volts the wire you are touching is grounded and will pop a fuse if connected through a fuse to a source of 12 volts , like your car battery yes , have fun , do not get frustrated - it's just a car - we are humans , vastly superior to any car , even a geo metro. wiring diagrams are available in the upper portion stickys in metro tech , thanks to JM Edited by mwebb, Dec 19 2009, 10:01 PM.

Lucky you, that IG fuse powers a lot of stuff! Such as the rad fan and fan relay.DRL module, stuff for the AC,ignition coil , noise suspension cendenser(maybe).autobox diag connector.audio alarm module??? and a couple other things. Chafed or corroded wires/connectors are suspect.a close visual inspection of the exposed wiring could be in order. If possible try to be methodical maybe make some notes. GL

all good advice. one other potential area to check is at the fuse box itself. i had to repair mine a long time ago and seem to remember that the underside of the box / fuse mounting could be vulnerable to shorting. dvoms are great learning tools.... i've given cheap ones to all the kids i know for years. |

Thanks everybody for the advice.... It looks as though I have some work cut out for me but no worries, I'll get it figured out. I'll check for everything you suggested. Great group of people here I'll let you know what happens P.S. Bad Bent I live way up north by Sandpoint, a little town called.. (don't laugh).. Athol Idaho. I got a friend down in McCall and going there next year to hunt Elk with him. Perhaps you heard of him Paul Medel, "Elk Nut Outdoor Productions"?? |

I don't get out much. Nope, even in such a small town neither I nor The Wife have met Paul. When you get down this way we'll have to go out for coffee.

have you installed a radio at all? I remember once I blew out my IG fuse when a bare wire touched when putting in a radio-surprising because I thought the radio hot wire was on another circut-but that's what happened |
