"WHY ?"

i have a 92 xfi that is at 391,000 total mileage, bottomend of unknown duration, head, valves, water pump, alternator, battery, salvage replacement injector and unplugged TB coolant pass. all in the last 3,000 mls. the plugs are clean, it doesn't leak or smoke and the tailpipe is burnt charcoal grey.

this car has a complete interior, jack ,spare, seats, belts etc. 12" wheels. the EGR is completely off, the thermastatic fast idle valve in the TB is gutted and blocked, the idle speed deal that raises the idle when acc. loads are added is off, the evap can lines are open to air. it starts right up, idles and runs smooth in all operating ranges with plenty of power all the way to the limiter.

i drive 30 mls. a day, and only 1 segment of my trip is 6 mls. before i need to stop, turn or both, others are single city blocks or up to 2-4 mls. in most places this would be considered city driving and my last tank of gas gave me a solid 49.2mpg over a span of 20-30* temps. with rain and snow at times.

so my question remains, "WHY" do i need the EGR system.

thanks,
steve
