crankcase

Hey Pancake,

How did you get the inner oil seal on (1994 model etc). I don't have the special tool and have tried it a couple of ways, but always jacked up the seal a little. I've tried a seal driver kit and copying the special tool, but the seal seems too delicate for any of this.

Got 70 MPG?

Maybe yours is different than mine for some reason? I do have ABS and my knuckle is slightly different (provisions for the ABS speed sensor), so mine may have a race in it where yours doesn't... Sorry for the slow responses, but family time and all...

...well, it is a rather delicate seal, no doubt... when i did mine, I greased it up good
on it's outside edge, and on the inside surface that it gets installed into...
then try to get it started all the way around with your fingers, doesnt have to be much,
just get the edge started all the way round...
then i used a flat end on a piece of wide wood dowling, tapping lightly around the top/outside
edge of the seal till it was in place...
i think that the seal is really there to provide a degree more of extra protection
for the bearing itself....
note, that the bearing is already sealed on the same side that faces the oil seal...so?!
I hope this helps and/or makes sense (?)
``...Hope for the best, Expect nothing... And all will be good!

Thanks,

I will give that a try next time. The cone type tools have not worked well for me.

Soooo.......looking at the pictures, it looks like the bearing is supposed to be installed into the steering knuckle, not on the hub....my hub has been rubbing on the knuckle (and the disk has been rubbing on the knuckle and the backing plate). I'm wondering if the spacer is still there (my old '91 Haynes manual doesn't give me info on wheel bearings).

I know this is an old thread, but it had some clues that might help me fix a problem that has been vexing me for weeks...

JoeBob,
Welcome to the forum...
and yes, if one of the spacers is missing, you would have rubbing.
Which one do you think is missing?

Well, I "hillbillied" the outer bearing off the hub shaft, and there is no spacer between the bearing and the inner face of the hub. I had the bearings pressed on about three years ago at an auto parts store, either it wasn't there to begin with, or they lost it. All I know is I had some really worn out bearings that needed replaced, they said they could press them into the knuckle, and I took them at their word. It worked OK for awhile, but I've had rubbing from time to time over the intervening years, and it's gotten worse recently, especially after I replaced a worn CV axle.

I have a '92 Metro that needs a RF wheel bearing. Can anyone tell me if it's the two piece or one piece bearing?

Alrighty, I'm gonna replace both of them then. Is there anything other than the bearings that I need, and do you know a good place to get the stuff from?

Hi, I think this is the same problem I am having. There is a rubbing/grinding sound as I go down the road, and the sound disappears only when I make a right turn. lol.. I just replaced the front left wheel bearings, but there is still a rubbing sound as I go down the road (same as before). After looking at this diagram, I am pretty sure that the outer spacer is missing. Where did you find one? Autozone gave me a wheel seal, a rubber seal with a spring inside, but I can't figure out where this goes. This is not the inner oil seal that I needed, so I used the old one. But the main problem I have is, I think there is a spacer missing between the hub and the steering knuckle. You said you replaced it and no more rubbing sound, but where did you find it?

Welcome to GMF, Johnross999!

I got mine from a junkyard. Just went and took everything apart until I came to the spacer. It's been five years ago, but if memory serves, I believe they just gave me the spacer. Of course, I think I was purchasing other items at the same time.

Your description sounds just like the issue I was having.
