I recently purchased a 91 Geo Metro, 5 sp, 1.0 3 cyl. with 68,000 miles, but I now wonder if I should have purchased a more recent Metro with more accessories like a tach, or 4 door, etc.

As long as it has the 1.0 3 cyl., it will get me approx. the same MPG, is this correct? or is there a different engine size on these metros that will get better MPG?

Also, does anybody know which model year of these metros gets the best MPG?

You've got one of the best ones for mileage. The 95 and newer cars weight quite a bit more and don't get the mileage that the 89-94 version did. Absolute best is the 89-94 XFI, had all black bumpers and the letters "MS" in the VIN. Regular mileage Metros had "MR" in the VIN and either half or full painted bumpers.

You'll do great with your 1.0 5 speed. Tachs help but you can add one with a used instrument cluster. The best is an XFI as stated above.

3.79:1 gearing in the tranny (?), cam, ecu, 50 hp. I'm sure additions will appear, but thats the basis of it.

The reasons are as Woodie said, along with the car weight itself being slightly lower than a regular Metro. And a/c? No. Just the most basics that make up a car. These are also the reasons as to why the xfi is so hard to find, as most people couldn't tolerate the bare bones, roller-skate idea of transportation.

XFi= different tune, economy cam, (both of those lower torque curve and HP numbers), side mirror delete, lower gear ratio... all I can think of.
