After driving a large SUV with a huge engine for years, I finally discovered the metro, but... can these cars with a tiny 1.0 three cylinder engine be reliable, given the fact that you do proper maintenance? I mean, sometimes I'm on the highway doing 70 mph, knowing the car can go faster, I'm wondering if I'm already abusing the engine by going this fast. Would this car be reliable to drive from one end of the country to the other at high speeds? |

nah youll be fine, they are pretty stout motors if maintained. for the record, my 1.0 can go 220kmh and still accelerate, and do 0-60 in 5 sec. but in stock form, you can beat on them all day as long as you change the oil

I only know that a worn engine running at constant high RPM's is a bad thing. These cars are very reliable. I rebuilt Christine in June of 2008 and 70,000 miles later I have had no issues except normal wearout items like brakes that were due anyway. If you go to the project forum and look up "Mr's Mullet's Extreme Metro Makeover" you will see I purchased a piece of shit Metro, rebuilt it and then took it on a 1,200 mile road trip right after. We have also been running back and forth to Central, PA due to my mom passing recently and we already put almost 10,000 miles on it with no problems. Ask anyone who came to GeoPalooza. These cars love road trips. |

There is a sight on the net ,where you can buy gear adapters, to bolt 3 cylinder GEO motors to small airplanes. They say, they are more reliable and better on gas than the motors the planes came with .So the motors have to run a constant speed for a LONG TIME.That is really putting your trust in that little motor.

Would the car be reliable to drive from one end of the country to the other? I suppose that depends on the car. Some of these Metros are approaching 20 years old. Yup, these 1.0 engines appear to be tough, but there is more to a car than an engine, and lots of other stuff could "sideline" your trip. I've driven "older/cheaper" vehicles for quite a while and stuff breaks. Do I take my Firefly on trips? Ya, but if it did break down, it really wouldn't surprise me. Most of my driving is in the city, so I'm not so concerned. |

70k miles in a year and a half? Yikes. You should post some kind of comparison to an everyday type car/truck showing how much $$$ you've saved in gasoline. |

I think it would be a neat road trip coast to coast in our Metros. I went from the coast in the NW to Colorado Springs last Feb. I had about 180k on the motor. I had a new timing belt at home. I even thought about changing it the day before the trip. But I am wary about doing something major and then starting a long trip. The timing belt broke about 10 miles short of the Vail pass on the way back. It had about 60k on the belt. Other than that I had no problems. Some where around here is a thread about the longest trip in your metro. |
