Disconnect the battery. Remove to small covers on back of wheel. Remove 2 screws holding airbag. Remove steering wheel center nut. Strike wheel until it pops loose or use a puller. |

I'm not sure if the Metro will do it but some people pull the OEM airbag wheel off Miatas and that always makes a dash light blink continuously. When I did mine I added a resistor (cannot remember how much) the the circuit so the computer thought the airbag was still there. |

Rather than disconnect the battery, can't you remove only the 15A airbag fuse? Disco-ing the battery resets the ECU and the radio! |

Pulling the fuse *should* work, but I would have to think that resetting the radio stations would be a small price to pay to ensure the air bag would not go off.... Personally, I disconnect the battery, and wait 2-10 min to ensure any backup system is discharged. Then I pull the fuse as well. Redundant I know, but alot less to clean up and hurts alot less! After removing the drivers side airbag the passengers side will be fine, but the airbag light will stay on. I don't know if it would deploy in a crash though. Only thing I would add to the Mullet's post is after you pull the covers there is one large airbag connector under the left side and two small connectors under the right side to disconnect. Disconnect these before you pull the two retaining bolts. Just saw how old this topic is...wow.

Wha, whoa, say WHAT? The airbag light stays on? How do we reset that? I want to do this because my '96 has intermittent wipers and the '00 does not. Swapping switches is the solution, but not if I can't put everything back as it was! Edited by MrPink, Aug 11 2011, 09:20 AM.

Your good to go on switching the switches. The airbag light will only stay on if you leave the airbag unpluged.

you should be able to swap the multi switch and then put it all back as it was NO PROBLEM NO LIGHTS. the issue is removing the airbag. in some states this is illegal. its also literally an EXPLOSIVE CHARGE sitting in that airbag. you REALLY don't want any part of your anatomy in front of that while messing with it :-) |

Oh, okay. The lamp goes off when we reconnect the airbag. That makes much more sense. And I definitely want my old switch on this other Metro! Yes, I am well aware of the airbag danger and will handle it very carefully. |

I don't see two covers on the back of the wheel. There is one cover at bottom center rear, covering the power connectors. But there are no covers! Can someone show me this with a photograph? |

I don't know if your vert is the same but this is what it looks like on my '95![]() These are the covers you need to open. ![]() Just push back where the red arrow points and it will pop open, that torx screw holding the airbag in can be removed by a 9 mm 12point socket |

I know this is and old thread, but unhooking the battery or pulling the fuse is a waste of time. The airbag system has it's own battery under the console in front of the shifter. It's the wires on the back of the steering wheel that count. The convertibles are different, they have one cover on the bottom for the wires but the Torx bolts aren't under a cover. Use a Torx socket instead of a 12 point. They aren't that hard to find and if you round the heads off it's an all day job to pull the column and drill the bolts.
