it is a very bad idea to use any oil (including 10w40) other than

5w-30 or Mobil one 0w 40 which tests as 5w 30 in use as per blackstone labs testing in
"bobistheoilguy"
you should navigate to the site above to learn about lubricants

if you do not want to learn about oil
just use
synthetic oil with European specification ACEA A3 B3,B4 or
BMW LL01 or VW Audi 505 / 503.1 / 502 or MB 229.5
===========================================
the PCV valve can cause oil loss two ways
if it sticks open AND if it sticks closed
mine was stuck closed when i got my car , cam seal , was popped out too ...

it is so cheap it does not pay to test it , if you have not replaced yours in the last 30k miles
just replace it now

Thanks you all for the replies, but it turned out to be something so simple...a hole in the oil filter. For two days I put three quarts in a day. There were no long trips, no changes, no nothing. Which is why I was so shocked a good running engine that used zero oil (well, half a quart between changes every 5000 miles) would suddenly out of nowhere start using three quarts a day!! But we got her all fixed up now. Now I'm just curious how she got a hole punched in the oil filter! Guess those things just happen.

Got 70 MPG?

Not normally they don't, and our oil filters are no where near the bottom of the car. I'd inspect the surrounding area as well for damage. If something was able to punch a hole in that oil filter, then it could have done the same to your oil pan as well, and they are right beside each other...

Well I'll know about that this afternoon when I give things a once over again before leaving for home. I drive 50 miles each way to work, things went well coming in this morning but I will check things out before my trip home.

If you are driving that far for work. Keep a quart of oil under the seat. With only just over 3 quarts in the pan. If you loose some. It means a big problem for our cars. Glad to see you figured it out. I would not have guessed a hole in the filter
