I have a 94 Metro w/ 137,000 miles. I have had the car since around 95,000 and the fan blower does not work on the #1 setting. It generally works on the #2 setting, but sometimes will cut off and tapping the switch will get it blowing again. It always works fine on the #3 and #4 settings. The switch itself does not feel loose or otherwise faulty. I heard on NPR's Car Talk the other week about someone with a similar problem on a different car. Click and Clack suggested replacing some type of fan blower resistor fuse. Does this sound like the likely culprit? If so, what exactly is the part I should be looking to replace. |

The switch itself is known to come apart. A zip tie will fix that. |

Johnny, Can you please elaborate? As I mentioned, the switch does not feel as if it is loose or otherwise falling apart. Where do you suggest I look to place the zip tie you speak of? |

There are 2 issues with the blower motor on these cars. One is the switch will start to separate and lose contact. If you remove the radio bezel and then remove the screws to the heater control, you can sneak it out and see the switch from behind. Squeeze it back together and wrap a zip tie around it to fix it. If that is not the problem, then the blower resistor is beginning to fail. This is a small circuit board thingy screwed into the duct work near the blower motor. My 1998 metro has #3 and #4 positions working at the moment. I need a resistor. |

Interesting topic. My 2000 metro 3/5 has all 4 positions working, but there are no stops on the switch. What I am trying to say is that the detents that stop the switch in the various positions are gone. Can this switch be replaced easily? Rob |

My guess is that you are saying "the control lever on the fan switch does not feel as if it is loose or otherwise falling apart". Johnny is saying that you need to tear into the dash and put a zip tie around the actual electrical switch that is falling apart. I have this problem on my 94 and have yet to get around to fixing it. |

Let me jump in and add that it's not that hard. The bezel is the hardest as the screws are "hidden" or are under the ledge. The control unit in the '96 pulled out enough that the zip tie could be snaked around the switch and tightened tight enough, then slid back into place. Link to '96 Dash Exploded View. |

Same thing with my 2000 as well. It feels like a dimmer switch, no clicking between the speeds. I haven't taken a closer look to see what is going on there. I'll deal with that after I swap out the trans. |
