I just filled up and got 45.896 MPG. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. This is my 3rd fill up since I bought the car and the last 2 tanks were around 38MPG. The temperatures have come up around 30-40 degrees also, so I know the air temp has a lot to do with it, but it seems like a lot. I mean, 7 almost 8 MPG just with warmer weather? I am asking if this is reasonable because I am wondering if something else is going on/wrong with the car. Any opinions?

My cars can vary in MPG depending on the weather. On a warm "winter" day I can get good MPG's ans long as the roads are clear. I have seen a high of 70 MPG on my Metro in the summer to a low of 47 MPG presently. That's a huge difference. |

Got 70 MPG?

I got 47 myself on my last tank. I usually get around 55 in the summer. |

Same for me here in damp Oregon. Today's fillup = 47.5, last tank was 42. The warmer and less rain the mileage goes up to 52+. |

Same for me, around 46 mpg now and 51 in the summer. Plus 40 deg. would mean 8% increase in air density and, by one estimate, 4 psi increase in tire air pressure. Hence the instructions to check the tire pressures cold, eh.Depends on how well you are taking care of your car and your driving habits, plus or minus a few mods. Improvements like this certainly indicate that you are a conscientious Geo owner.

Temperature certainly makes a difference, but so do many, many other things. Could be you didn't get it all the way full this time, that could account for 3 mpg or so. You might be getting more in tune with the car and driving it better, or the car could be responding to regular use and freeing up (if it was sitting). Simply too many factors involved to tell until you've got ten tanks or so through it to establish a reliable baseline. Should also add that I don't consider anything less than ten gallons a tank. |

Interesting points. Just so I understand, the method I am using for checking mileage is that I divide the miles per tank by the number of gallons I just put in. That is the difference of miles between the last fill up and this one. Example: If I fill up at 185,000 miles and Then fill up again at 185, 350 then I have traveled 350 miles on that tank of gas. I then divide that number by the gallons I put in at the second fill up. Is this the correct proccedure? |

I think Woodie is right. It's got a LOT to do with you getting in tune with your "new" car. That's going to be a factor for a couple of months. Just be patient, and enjoy watching the number go up. |

During my ride in to work tonight my MPGuino was showing 50 MPG (this is on my '94). Yesterday it was showing 45. The difference? About 10 or so degrees warmer tonight... |

yeah, temp has so much to do with MPG. It will be interesting to see how it all balances out this summer with running the AC. I live in east central Florida.....AC is a must

I filled up today at 8.75 gallons and got 42mpg. My last tank was 40mpg. In between these 2 fill ups i did the Bumper air dam mod, changed and fixed a stuck brake caliper with new pads and rotors, plus new Cap and rotor. I was hoping to get at least 4-5 with the mods but like i said mods were made between fillups. Half of my commute is in the middle of the night so so. cal temps here is a freezing 54deg. HAHA. Winter day temps is about 70. I also have the connection sleeve at the air intake disconnected so its getting air straight from the engine compartment. Hopefully my next tank fill up will read 44-45mpg. Im planning on lowering about 1.25" so maybe that will help with some of the aerodynamics and doing the stock timing advance. I hope so because im not looking forward to a bumpier ride. Gas $ here in Los Angeles today was $3.29 for super. It will most likely start rising again and peak at about Easter. Cost me $28 to fill up with 8.75 Gallons. My air dam mod. The radiator temp hasn't seemed to change but come summer if it does i'll add some dimple die holes to the drive side of the dam. ![]() Edited by Hollywood, Jan 18 2010, 07:20 PM.
