What are thrust bearings, and where do they go? Do they need to be replaced if the car has 170k?

The thrust bearings are in between the crankshaft and block housing. They will need replaced if the crankshaft has in and out slop.

Note that in the black and white picture above, the thrust bearing (sometimes it is called the thrust washer) is the flat "C" shaped piece of metal with the two grooves in it (shows up as two dark stripes in the picture). Here is a picture of a Geo thrust washer - BEWARE that I am holding mine BACKWARDS! The grooves go towards the outside of the journals and towards the crank surface. DO NOT put them in the way I am holding them! The first time I had ever held a thrust washer was when this picture was taken and I had no idea which direction was correct. Probably a good idea that I didn't install it this way <G>. The other C shaped band thing with a groove and round hole in it is a main bearing. Your crank shaft sits on these.
